††The Rubik Cube was invented by a Hungarian architect, Erno Rubik, in 1980, and gained widespread popularity. Each side of the cube was divided into sixteen squares in one of six colours. Looking at an individual side of the cube, any vertical or horizontal line of four squares could be rotated as a separate section.
The section could be moved to match up with any of the three other sides in its line of rotation. In this manner the coloured squares could be completely dispersed. The object of the puzzle was to return the squares to their original places.
