††The seismograph was developed to record vibrations in the Earth, thus making it possible to judge the size and scale of earthquakes. Readings from the device can be studied over time and predictions can be made as to when earthquakes may strike. A simple instrument that could detect the direction of an earthquake was made in ancient China in 132 AD. The earliest form of seismograph was developed by an Italian scientist Luigi Palmeri in 1855. A more successful version was built by a British scientist John Milne in 1880. Today we use the Richter scale in order to express seismographic results. This was the brainchild of Charles Richter and first appeared in 1935.
