††The drink called Ovaltine was developed in 1903 by Dr George Wander who set out to manufacture a concentrated extract of barley malt. The drink was tested at a Swiss hospital with favourable results, and was finally launched under the name 'Ovomaltine' in 1904. The drink did not acquire its current name until 1909 when it was misnamed during its introduction to England.
Ovaltine was marketed as an aid to sleep as well as general good health, and was so popular that it spawned its own children's club.
