††Papyrus was used by the Egyptians as a writing surface. They peeled strips from the reeds which grew along the Nile, and attached them together to make sheets.
Two sheets would then be laid at right-angles to each other and stuck together to form a single strong sheet. Natural juices within the plant material acted as a kind of glue.
