  1. ††The paperclip was invented by Johann Waaler from Norway in 1900.
  2. Over 2 billion paperclips are manufactured annually in the UK alone.  The basic design has remained unchanged.
  3. Johann Waaler's fellow countrymen honoured his innovative invention in October 1989 by making a giant iron paperclip measuring 7 metres, and weighing 602 kg. It was erected in Oslo, Norway.
