††A hydrofoil is a wing-like structure fitted each side beneath the hull of a boat. As the boat gathers speed, the hydrofoils lift the boat out of the water so that only the hydrofoils and propellers remain submerged. This reduces the drag of water on the hull so that the boat can travel at very high speeds. Any boat carried on submerged wings is also called a hydrofoil. The first true hydrofoil was probably built by an Italian inventor, Enrico Forlamini between 1898 and 1905, but hydrofoils were not widely used until the 1950s.
