††A liquid crystal display, or LCD, is a screen on which dark numbers or letters appear. Liquid crystals, from which LCDs get their name, were first studied in 1888, but no use could be thought of for them.
The display consists of a special transparent liquid crystal held between two sheets of glass in a certain pattern.
When electricity is passed through the liquid crystal, it appears darker in the segments needed to show the right numbers or letters, while the other segments stay transparent.
