Language first evolved when early people learnt to associate a simple series of sounds with set meanings. We can only trace the development of language through its written forms, as there can be little conclusive evidence of verbal use.
The first 'written' material is actually cave paintings, which are believed to have been created for communication purposes. Systems of signs and symbols gradually evolved. One of the earliest forms of 'writing' was cuneiform, which was practised in Babylonia around 1800 BC.
