Edward Jenner was born in 1749 in Berkeley, England. At the age of 21 he went to London and was taught medicine by the famous surgeon John Hunter. He returned to Berkeley where he spent the rest of his life. Smallpox was a major disease at the time, and Jenner discovered a vaccine against it in 1796. By inoculating a child with cowpox, and later with smallpox, he found that the child did not contract smallpox. He became a famous doctor and received honours from France, Russia and the USA.
