Huygens was born at The Hague in the Netherlands in 1629 and went on to study at Leiden University. He became a physicist and astronomer, and made many discoveries. He was the first person to suggest that light travels in waves. He also invented many useful tools, including the first practical pendulum clock; the first clock to have a good degree of accuracy. Huygens also made the best telescopes of his time and used them to make astronomical discoveries, such as Saturn's rings.
