A classic example of an appliance needing such a precaution would be the lawn-mower - electrocutions triggered by cutting through the cable have been common. The device instantly cuts off the power if an unusual change occurs in the flow of the current.
In basic terms a circuit-breaker is an electromagnetic switch which creates a break in the circuit if the current becomes too high. The power can be switched on again by pressing a switch on the circuit-breaker to reset it.
Larger versions of circuit-breakers are installed in power stations and high-voltage electricity sub-stations.
