Cigarettes were first manufactured in 1843 by the French state-owned company Manufacture FranÁais des Tabacs. Cigars, tobacco wrapped in a leaf rather than paper, were smoked in Central and South America long before this. Today, cigarette smoking is the most common form of tobacco smoking, although it is dangerous to the health of both smokers and non-smokers who breathe in the smoke.
