††††Legend has it that the candle clock was invented by King Alfred the Great of England in the 9th century. The candle would have hours marked down its side and the time could be told from the remaining height of the candle. A different form of candle clock is described in a document surviving from the year 1180 AD. This used the gradual weight loss of a burning candle to activate a mechanism indicating the passage of time.
