††††Pieces for the board game we call chess have been found dating back to the 2nd century. The game first appeared in India around the year 500, and reached Europe by the 10th century. The moves we use in today's version were developed in Europe in the mid-1500s.
There is now an international body to control the game and world championships have been held regularly since 1886.
