††††Philips of the Netherlands and Sony of Japan introduced the Compact Disc Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) in 1984. CD-ROMS are optical discs like CDs which can store large amounts of digital information.
Philips went on to invest in a version of the CD-ROM called Compact Disc Interactive (CD-I).
CD-ROMs are used for distributing large quantities of illustrated text such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, technical manuals and text books.
