††††Casting is the process of producing solid objects by pouring molten material into a shaped mould and allowing it to cool. Casting is used to shape glass and plastics, as well as metals and alloys.
The casting of metals has been carried out for more than 6,000 years, using first copper and bronze, then iron.
The traditional method of casting is known as sand casting. A model of the object to be produced is pushed into a mixture of damp sand and clay and then carefully removed. Molten metal is poured into the mould and then allowed to cool and solidify. The sand mould is then broken to release the casting.
