††††In 1879 James Ritty invented the first cash register for use in his saloon bar, and named it Ritty's Incorruptable Cashier.
The machine was intended to stop his staff from pilfering money.
The idea was not a success until John Patterson bought the rights in 1884 and sold the machine through his National Cash Register Company. By 1911 a million had been sold. Modern electronic tills add up the bill and print a receipt.
