††††Domes were built in Mesopotamia from at least 3500 BC, along with arches, columns and vaults. They were widely used in Roman architecture and continued to be a popular feature of many buildings long after the Roman Empire fell. Some domed structures are still standing today, and are often large, important, religious buildings.
