††††A battleship is a large, heavily armoured warship. In spite of its large size, a battleship is manoeuvrable, and has the ability to travel great distances. The first modern battleship was the British Navy Dreadnought which was introduced in 1906. The Dreadnought was armed with heavy guns and protected by thick steel armour. After the Second World War, battleships were superseded by cheaper and more versatile warships.
