Wernher von Braun was a German rocket scientist who developed the first true missile, the V-2, which was used in the Second World War. After the Germans were defeated, von Braun was taken to the US where he worked on the development of space rockets. Von Braun headed the teams that put the first American artificial satellite, Explorer 1, into orbit and the first astronauts on the moon.
