  3. Babbage built the first automatic calculator, the 'Difference Engine', and designed the first computer which he called the 'Analytical Engine'.  The calculator could work out logarithms and perform trigonometry.   The computer was designed to calculate according to a programmable set of instructions, by means of punch cards.  They were never completed, but his work is seen as the fundamental beginnings of the development of the computer.
