The son of an astrologer, Archimedes was born in Sicily, an island off southern Italy. He spent his life studying geometry and developed many inventions, including the Archimedes Screw which is used to raise water for irrigation. He is famous for supposedly jumping out of his bath shouting "Eureka!" when he discovered that the water level rose higher the more of his body he immersed.
