  7.      Summary:  For  a  genealogist  on  a tight budget who wants to produce a
  8.      family  history  from  PAF,  PAF Ability is probably your best bet.  For
  9.      producing  a compact listing of your data to take with you on a research
  10.      trip,  it is excellent.  It is easy to use and produces about as nice an
  11.      appearance as possible using the fixed pitch fonts that it supports.  If
  12.      you  have a laser printer and a good word processor like Word Perfect or
  13.      Microsoft's Word, you would probably be much happier with GENBOOK if you
  14.      are  going  to  publish.   Although  GENBOOK  cost's  $49  more than PAF
  15.      Ability,  it  is  far  more  powerful  in  combination  with  your  word
  16.      processor.

  18.      Review:  PAF Ability has an attractive and effective user interface with
  19.      pull  down  menus  and  mouse  support.   The user can choose to include
  20.      source  notes,  other  notes,  both  or neither.  PAF Ability optionally
  21.      generates  an  index  of  one  or  two  columns and can also include dot
  22.      leaders and birth/death dates.  The page format can be controlled by the
  23.      user including margins on all four sides and the amount of space between
  24.      headers/footers  and  text.   The  user  has  extensive control over the
  25.      format  for  names and place names.  After setting the options, most can
  26.      be  saved and carried over to another printing session.  There is a very
  27.      easy  to  use,  and  powerful  search  capability  to  help you find the
  28.      individual you want to base your report on.

  30.      PAF  Ability  allows  you  to select either an Epson dot matrix or an HP
  31.      Laser  printer.   A  third  option is to include no printer codes in the
  32.      output.  The user can choose to use only 10 or 17 pitch fixed fonts.

  34.      I  was  working  with  the  latest version of PAF Ability, version 2.07,
  35.      which was released in February 1993.

  37.      Weaknesses: If the user has a printer which supports publication quality
  38.      proportional fonts, they still can't be used.

  40.      Although  the output can be written to a file, input to a word processor
  41.      for  use  of  better fonts, or inclusion of pictures and graphics is not
  42.      supported and would be difficult although not impossible.

  44.      PAF  Ability  is  sensitive  to the format of notes.  Embedded blanks in
  45.      your  notes  (e.g. from indenting) mess up the appearance of it's output
  46.      report.

  48.      Interpretation  of  some  contents  of  date  fields which were added in
  49.      version  2.31  of  PAF  is not available in this version.  The author is
  50.      working on the necessary revisions.
