  6.        1. INTRODUCTION:
  7.            Fractals Plus is a program designed to produce images of two
  8.            types of fractals; the Mandelbrot set and all the Julia sets.
  9.            It has been carefully crafted to do this as fast as possible
  10.            and in a user friendly manner.
  11.  
  12.            Help on how to use the program is available online by
  13.            pressing the [F1] key. This document contains notes on
  14.            running the program, and a troubleshooting section.
  15.  
  16.        2. INSTALLING THE PROGRAM:
  17.            Fractals Plus requires no "installation" procedure as such.
  18.            It can even be run from the distribution disk! If you wish
  19.            to run it from your hard disk then you should follow the
  20.            steps below.
  21.            1.  Make a new directory for the program by typing the
  22.                following instruction at your DOS prompt.
  23.                md \fractals <Enter>
  24.            2.  Change to the new directory by typing.
  25.                cd \fractals <Enter>
  26.            3.  Copy all the files from the floppy disk (assumed to be
  27.                in drive A, if it is not then substitute the appropriate
  28.                letter in the command).
  29.                copy a:*.* <Enter>
  30.            4.  The program is now installed, easy wasn't it!

  32.        3. RUNNING THE PROGRAM:
  33.            To run the program the current directory *must* be the
  34.            directory in which the Fractals Plus program is installed.
  35.            The program can then be started by typing the command:
  36.            fractals <Enter>
  37.            The program should load and show the introduction screen.
  38.            Press any key to clear this screen and proceed to the main
  39.            program.

  41.        4. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
  42.            Fractals Plus requires the following setup:
  43.              ■ 8088 or better processor
  44.              ■ 475 kB of available memory (more to load files)
  45.              ■ A VGA, MCGA or better graphics card. It must be capable
  46.                 of displaying the 320x200 mode with 256 colours
  47.              ■ DOS v3.00 or later
  48.            Optional extras are:
  49.              ■ An 80386sx or better processor for 32-bit mode
  50.              ■ A mouse for mouse operation
  51.  
  52.        5. POSSIBLE PROBLEMS:
  53.            Whilst loading Fractals Plus may display an error message.
  54.            The error message will be of the form:
  55.            "Fractals Plus v2.10 - abnormal exit due to: ???"
  56.            The possible error messages are listed in this section.
  57.  
  58.            "Insufficient available memory"
  59.            This will occur on loading, or on attempting to load or
  60.            save a file. It indicates that there is not enough memory
  61.            for Fractals Plus to run in. Fractals Plus requires at
  62.            least 475kB of available memory to run, and 500kB if you
  63.            want to load or save files.
  64.            Free up some memory by unloading TSRs etc and try running
  65.            Fractals Plus again.

  67.           "Can't load palette - required file MBROT.MPL"
  68.           "Can't load icons - required file ICONS.ICC"
  69.           "Can't load graphics - required file LOGO200S.GRA"
  70.           One of these messages will occur on startup if Fractals
  71.           Plus cannot find a file it requires.
  72.           The usual problem is that they are not situated in the
  73.           current directory. You should change to the directory
  74.           Fractals Plus is stored in, using the "cd" command,
  75.           before running Fractals Plus. You could also have
  76.           removed them by mistake, in which case you should
  77.           reinstall Fractals Plus (see section 2).

  79.           "Can't find current directory - error code: xxx"
  80.           This indicates that your DOS version is not compatible
  81.           with Fractals Plus. If you are using the correct version
  82.           of DOS then there is some other problem and you should
  83.           contact the authors.
  84.  
  85.           Other problems are usually due to a missing file MAIN.MBT.
  86.           This contains the image that is loaded on startup. If it is
  87.           not found in the current directory then Fractals Plus will
  88.           start up with a blank screen. Do not save an image with this
  89.           name as you will overwrite the correct startup image.
  90.  
  91.           When zooming in the zoom box may appear to the right of the
  92.           cross-hair mouse cursor. This is due to a problem with
  93.           Microsoft mouse drivers earlier than version 8.20. You will
  94.           either have to allow for this (particularly when trying to 
  95.           get Julia sets), unload your mouse driver before running 
  96.           Fractals, or upgrade your mouse driver.

  98.        6. LEGAL STUFF:
  99.            All trademarks used in the documentation are acknowledged.

  101.            Fractals Plus v2.10 is copyrighted. You may copy this
  102.            unregistered version subject to the conditions laid out in
  103.            the help file "Registering Fractals Plus".
  104.  
  105.            If you enjoy using this software, and wish to continue
  106.            using it, then you must register with the authors. Details
  107.            on how to do this are included in the help file "Registering
  108.            Fractals Plus", and are displayed on exiting.

  110.        7. OVERSEAS USERS:
  111.            Overseas users of Fractals Plus are still required to register.
  112.            To register you must send us a cheque payable to "Bruce Davidson"
  113.            to the normal address. Please ensure that the cheque is payable
  114.            in pounds sterling. We *cannot* accept cheques in other
  115.            currencies. The prices are shown below:
  116.                   European Union Countries           £15 
  117.                   United States and Canada           £20
  118.                   All other countries                £25
  119.            We will send disks by airmail to all non-EU countries.
