  6. This is version 1.60A of CheckMate Plus.  If you have been using
  7. any earlier version, read through this file before using v1.60A.

  10. ABOUT CHECKMATE PLUS
  11.  
  12. CheckMate Plus is a full-featured, easy to use, checkbook-based
  13. accounting package.  It is a REAL accounting package, with REAL
  14. double-entry transactions.  Unlike packages such as Quicken, you
  15. can produce true balance sheets and income statements as well as
  16. numerous budgeting and graphical reports.
  17.  
  18. CheckMate Plus is SHAREWARE, which means you are free to copy the
  19. ORIGINAL distribution disk (or file, if you got it from a BBS)
  20. and share it with whoever you please.  If you find CheckMate Plus
  21. to be useful and you use it beyond a reasonable evaluation
  22. period, we expect you to REGISTER your copy.

  25. HOW TO EVALUATE CHECKMATE PLUS
  26.  
  27. CheckMate Plus is intuitive, easy to use, and has extensive
  28. on-line help.  It is quite sophisticated, however, and you'll
  29. need the User's Guide to fully exploit its power.

  31. CheckMate Plus comes with a "disk-based" Introductory User's
  32. Guide to aid you in evaluation.  The Introductory User's Guide is
  33. quite large (150 pages).
  34.  
  35. If you got CheckMate Plus from a shareware vendor, you should have
  36. received the documentation disk as part of the package.  If you
  37. downloaded CheckMate Plus from a BBS, the documentation file should
  38. have been included in the download.  When you register, you'll receive
  39. the complete, 200+ page, illustrated User's Guide from us.

  160. July 31, 1994 -- Release of version 1.60A
  161. Bug fixes, corrections, and enhancements since version 1.50B:
  162.  
  163. 1)   We've officially changed our name since the last release of
  164.      CheckMate Plus.  "Custom Technologies" is now "CTech, Inc.",
  165.      with offices in Panama City, Florida and Bremerton, Washington.
  166.  
  167. 2)   You may now use variables defined in "calculation lines" (in the
  168.      custom reports) as parts of expressions in subsequent calculation
  169.      lines (as well as print the variables directly).  This makes
  170.      designing custom reports MUCH easier.
  171.  
  172. 3)   We fixed a bug in the WKS file generation that caused some users
  173.      to see all "zeros" for numbers (regardless of what their real
  174.      values should be).
  175.  
  176. 4)   We enhanced the WKS file generation of some of the reports.  In
  177.      previous versions of CheckMate Plus, "dates" were always exported
  178.      as "labels" (making them difficult to manipulate inside the
  179.      spreadsheet).  CheckMate Plus now exports dates as date fields
  180.      (in the dd-mmm-yy format).
  181.  
  182. 5)   We updated CheckMate Plus' source code to compile under Borland
  183.      Pascal v7.0.  This also allowed us to use a much newer version of
  184.      the database kernel (BTree Filer from TurboPower Software).  These
  185.      newer versions should mean increased performance and fewer
  186.      (hopefully *none*) "ISAM Errors".
  187.  
  188. 6)   We fixed a bug (inadvertantly introduced in v1.50A) that stopped
  189.      the "HOME" and "END" keys from operating properly in edit fields.
  190.  
  191. 7)   Earlier versions of CheckMate Plus' "search and filter" function
  192.      didn't properly find records (other than checks) when using the
  193.      "Vendor Account Number" as a search criteria.  It's fixed.
  194.  
  195. 8)   Eariler versions of CheckMate Plus' WKS generator had slight
  196.      "conversion errors".  For instance, the number 102.25 may appear
  197.      in your spreadsheet as 102.24999999995.  Version 1.60's revamped
  198.      WKS generator eliminates that effect.
  199.  
  200. 9)   We fixed a bug in the graphics reports that sometimes caused the
  201.      last month in a fiscal year to show revenue for an entire year.
  202.  
  203. 10)  We added "visual cues" in the transaction entry and edit screens
  204.      that indicate whether or not the selected transaction has any
  205.      data entered in the "stub" or "notes".
  206.  
  207. 11)  We added many period options to the Income Statement report module.
  208.      You can now generate standard income statements that include
  209.      current month and year to date totals on the same report.  You
  210.      can also generate "current month/current quarter" and "any three
  211.      successive months" on the same report.
  212.  
  213. 12)  We fixed a bug that caused the word "Balance" (on the header of the
  214.      Transaction Report) to be truncated (with some length settings).
  215.      NOTE:  The balance is not displayed by default... you tell
  216.      CheckMate Plus to display the balance by pressing <F3> in the
  217.      Transaction Report window.
  218.  
  219. 13)  Because the vast majority of PCs sold today have >1M of RAM and
  220.      ample hard drive space, we're no longer supporting the option of
  221.      running CheckMate Plus in a "floppy only" mode.  That is, a
  222.      hard drive is now required.  Also, you must have a minimum of
  223.      640K of DOS memory.  These changes free us to add more features
  224.      and options to CheckMate Plus.
  225.  
  226. 14)  We've added "Budget Reports" (for both revenue and expenses).
  227.      These reports compare actual values to those budget values you
  228.      entered while creating (or editing) the accounts.
  229.  
  230. 15)  You can now specify "period offsets" in custom reports (these
  231.      allow you to design reports that "compare" performance of
  232.      accounts from period to period).  You can also specify offsets
  233.      and print dates based on the starting month of the report.
  234.      NOTE: These changes are applicable to custom Income Statements
  235.      only.
  236.  
  237. 16)  We completely revamped the "Reconciliation Procedure".  You'll
  238.      find the routines much more intuitive and easier to complete.
  239.      They're also MUCH faster.
  240.  
  241. 17)  You can now tell CheckMate Plus how far back to search for
  242.      "uncleared" transactions (while reconciling).  You set this
  243.      option in the "General" window (under the "Setup" menu).  This
  244.      feature significantly speeds up the reconciliation process.
  245.  
  246. 18)  CheckMate Plus has all new graphics routines with many more
  247.      display options.  You can now display Bar Charts, 3D Bar Charts,
  248.      Layered 3D Bar Charts, Horizontal Bar Charts, Line Charts, Pie
  249.      Charts, and 3D Pie Charts.
  250.  
  251. 19)  CheckMate Plus now supports VESA Super VGA cards and monitors
  252.      for displaying graphics.  Supported modes (beyond standard VGA)
  253.      are 800x600 and 1024x768.
  254.  
  255. 20)  You can now "print" graphics reports to any of several hundred
  256.      printers supported by CheckMate Plus' graphics print routines.
  257.  
  258. 21)  CheckMate Plus now lets you pick your video option (for graphics
  259.      displays) directly (under the Setup menu).  In previous versions,
  260.      you had to set your video option with the installation program.
  261.  
  262. 22)  You can now tell CheckMate Plus to substitute the spelling
  263.      "CHEQUE" for "CHECK" wherever it appears on the screen or while
  264.      printing.  (For our international users).
  265.  
  266. 23)  CheckMate Plus can now "switch" the position of commas and the
  267.      decimal point in numbers.  For instance, the number "1,023.45"
  268.      would appear as "1.023,45".  (For some international users).
  269.  
  270. 24)  CheckMate Plus now has "built-in" backup and restore procedures
  271.      (with data compression).  The routines are intended to protect
  272.      against data loss in the event of hardware problems or file
  273.      corruption.
  274.  
  275. 25)  We fixed a bug that caused the right-side "arrows" and the
  276.      vertical line of the "browse" and "reconcile" window to disappear
  277.      when you pressed <PgDn> or <PgUp>.  The problem was video card
  278.      dependent and only happened on some machines.
  279.  
  280. 26)  CheckMate Plus now sets the "opening date" of accounts to the day
  281.      *before* your "purge" date (when you use the "Close Transactions"
  282.      option).  Previously, the date was set to the exact purge date
  283.      (which could cause your accounting reports to merge balances into
  284.      the next month's statements).
  285.  
  286. 27)  We fixed a bug that caused CheckMate Plus to display "garbage" in
  287.      the "Transaction Edit" window when you used the "Jump To" option
  288.      and selected a date that's beyond the newest transaction in the
  289.      file.  The Jump To function now operates properly.
  290.  
  291. 28)  CheckMate Plus now correctly saves the option to print totals at
  292.      the end of a transaction report.  Some earlier versions would
  293.      "forget" that the option was set (even when you pressed F10 to
  294.      save the options to disk).
  295.  
  296. 29)  We restructured CheckMate Plus' decision tree for how it decides
  297.      when to "rebuild" balances.  If the rebuild is going to be very
  298.      slow, CheckMate Plus will "wait" until you exit the function you're
  299.      in before automatically rebuilding.  This means, for example, you
  300.      can enter lots of "old" transactions without having to wait for
  301.      a long rebuild between each one.
  302.  
  303. 30)  We improved the "Rebuild Accounts" function to delete any erroneous
  304.      references to non-existent accounts.
  305.  
  306. 31)  We fixed a bug that caused custom reports to "bomb" when a
  307.      non-existent account was referenced in the report definition.  This
  308.      bug caused the program to crash.  Now, such references will return
  309.      a value of "zero" when you run the report.
  310.  
  311. Jun 26, 1992 -- Release of version 1.50B
  312. Bug fixes and corrections from version 1.50A:
  313.  
  314. 1)   While correcting the rare bug in version 1.50 (discussed below), we
  315.      inadvertantly introduced a new bug that can cause transactions to
  316.      "disappear" while doing a "complete rebuild".  This has been fixed
  317.      in this version.  We'll ship all registered users who received 1.50A
  318.      a free update.
  319.  
  320. Apr 21, 1992 -- Release of version 1.50A
  321. Bug fixes and corrections from version 1.50:
  322.  
  323. 1)   We fixed a very odd (and rare) bug involving account number 20003
  324.      and transactions whose "payto" line begins with a capital "N".  The
  325.      bug caused "bogus" transactions to appear in account number 20003.
  326.      Chances are you've never experienced this bug... but if you have,
  327.      it's fixed.
  328.  
  329. 2)   The "expense transactions" option incorrectly identified in-balance
  330.      transactions that used all twelve split lines as being out-of-balance.
  331.      That bug is fixed.
  332.  
  333. 3)   We modified the data entry routines to allow most extended characters
  334.      (including the British pound sign "£") to be entered via the
  335.      alt-"number" key sequence (and from remapped keyboards).  This
  336.      primarily benefits our European users.
  337.  
  338. 4)   We fixed a bug in the Ledger Activity Report that truncated the date
  339.      while printing each account (the truncation only occurred for the
  340.      date formats starting with the "day" rather than the "month").
  341.  
  342. 5)   We fixed a small bug in the "sort by check number and type" feature
  343.      (while browsing or reconciling) that sometimes caused non-check
  344.      transactions to list out-of-date sequence.
  345.  
  346. 6)   We modified the report modules to always blank the page footer when
  347.      you first enter the report setup window.  This prevents "lingering"
  348.      footers from report to report (especially from the reconciliation
  349.      report).
  350.  
  351. Feb 1, 1992 -- Release of version 1.50
  352. Bug fixes, corrections, and new features:
  353.  
  354. 1)   We added a "data check" to warn you when you enter a transaction
  355.      that predates the creation of any accounts included in that
  356.      transaction.  This will prevent some unexpected (although correct)
  357.      side effects in account opening balances.
  358.  
  359. 2)   CheckMate Plus will now warn you if you enter a transaction dated
  360.      in the future (that is, if the transaction date is later than the
  361.      system date).  You can disable this feature with a command in
  362.      the CMPLUS.CFG file (see User's Guide or User's Guide addendum).
  363.  
  364. 3)   We fixed a bug that caused CheckMate Plus to "lock up" in the
  365.      detailed expense graph if you have more than 32 expense accounts.
  366.      (CheckMate Plus can only display the first 32 accounts).
  367.  
  368. 4)   We *significantly* sped up most account rebuilds in CheckMate Plus.
  369.      You should see dramatic improvements when you edit or enter trans-
  370.      actions within a few days or weeks of the end of your file.
  371.  
  372. 5)   Many reports can now be printed to a "WKS" file for importing to
  373.      most spreadsheet programs.
  374.  
  375. 6)   The "high-lighted bar" in the reconcile window now moves down
  376.      automatically after you press the <space bar>.
  377.  
  378. 7)   We added a feature that seeks out unbalanced transactions and lets
  379.      you correct them on the spot.
  380.  
  381. 8)   We added a "GL Analysis" report that analyzes your books and
  382.      suggests how to correct them (if they're out of balance).
  383.  
  384. 9)   We fixed a bug that caused the balances in the transaction report
  385.      to be incorrect (for accounts other than checking accounts).
  386.  
  387. 10)  We added a new variable in the "search and filter" window.  You
  388.      can now match "transaction type".
  389.  
  390. 11)  We fixed a bug that caused the control account to switch to "No
  391.      Account" when exiting graphics.

  393. 12)  We fixed a major array index bug in the custom report module.  Users
  394.      who defined more than two custom reports could experience unpre-
  395.      dictable problems.

  397. 13)  The first line in a custom report definition now correctly prints
  398.      below the header information.

  400. 14)  We fixed a line count error that could cause custom reports to
  401.      sometimes incorrectly paginate.

  403. 15)  We fixed a bug in the custom reports that severely limited the
  404.      number of variables that could be defined (some variables would
  405.      incorrectly calculate to "0.00").

  407. 16)  We added the option to sort the browse and reconcile windows by
  408.      check number and transaction type.  You can also sort the reconcile
  409.      report.

  411. 17)  We revamped the internal rebuilds to make them more rebust and
  412.      correct more potential problems and file corruptions.

  414. Jan 6, 1991 -- Release of version 1.01A
  415. Bug fixes and corrections from version 1.01:
  416.  
  417. 1)   We fixed a bug in the "past fiscal years" calculation on the
  418.      balance sheet.  Prior to this version, transactions posted
  419.      on the last day of past fiscal years weren't picked up on
  420.      the balance sheet.
  421.  
  422. 2)   The "reconcile report" would incorrectly list "zero"
  423.      transactions (such as a voided check) as a "credit".  We
  424.      fixed it.
  425.  
  426. 3)   We corrected the alignment of final totals on the "reconcile
  427.      report" (one total was one column off).
  428.  
  429. 4)   The "transaction report" would sometimes unnecessarily
  430.      search the database multiple times.  This has been fixed.

  433.      "calculation lines" and "Use Parentheses" was "YES").  This
  434.      bug caused CheckMate Plus to incorrectly evaluate negative

  438. Bug fixes and corrections from version 1.00:
  439.  
  440. 1)   Some transactions were duplicated in the Ledger Activity
  441.      Report.  We've corrected this.
  442.  
  443. 2)   We corrected balance computations in the Ledger Activity
  444.      Report.
  445.  
  446. 3)   We fixed the "Search and Filter" window (it could not find
  447.      check numbers).

  449. 4)   We implemented debit and credit totals on the Transaction

  452. 5)   We fixed a screen display problem when entering date

  476. 14)  The automatic rebuild when you start CheckMate Plus now
  477.      preserves the default account.

  479. 15)  We reworked all three rebuild functions for better
  480.      reliability.

  482. 16)  We fixed the Reconcile window so the <F10> key now takes you
  483.      back to the menu.

  485. 17)  We removed the "beep" when an "EMS" driver isn't available.
  486.  
  487. 18)  CheckMate Plus now "remembers" the last date you entered on
  488.      each transaction (instead of starting with the DOS date each
  489.      time).

  491. 19)  "Date Activated" transactions dated on the 31st now work
  492.      correctly.

  494. 20)  The <F3> key now pulls the "memo" line in (while working in
  495.      the "split" window).

  497. 21)  A very strange decompression bug has been fixed.  This could
  498.      cause unpredictable results.  (If you've had weird problems,
  499.      this could well have been the culprit).

  501. 22)  "Delete Account" now works properly.
  502.  
  503. 23)  "Edit Account" now correctly updates the database.
  504.  
  505. 24)  CheckMate Plus now correctly handles the menu when all
  506.      custom reports have been deleted.

  508. 25)  You can now edit the check layout while printing checks
  509.      (with the <F2> key).

  511. 26)  The "INPUT" command (for printing checks) now correctly
  512.      inputs "real: numnbers.

  514. 27)  You can now adjust the number of digits displayed after the
  515.      decimal point on checks, but it only works while commas are
  516.      turned OFF!
