│ I. Introduction to the Utility │
└────────────────────────────────┘
After writing the Birth Date Utility for PCBoard, I had some really nice
comments come in. I then knew that more and more people have started
using some of my programs. Which makes me feel a whole lot better
because now I know that I am not just writing these for myself.
A couple of people asked me to write a utility that was similar to the
birth date utility but instead of prompting for the birth date, prompt
for the phone number. I finally got a chance to bring it to all you
PCBoard sysops. This one is actually much easier to install because
there is really only one place you want to put it, and that would be the
phone number prompt. This program will work for both VOICE and DATA
prompts.
The really nifty thing about these utilities, is that they will keep the
correct format while the user is typing the phone number. So when a user
is entering his or her phone number, he or she won't have to enter in the
dashes (-) or the Parentheses (()), the utility inserts them when needed.
┌─────────────────────────────┐
│ II. Features of the Utility │
└─────────────────────────────┘
The following is a list of features of this utility:
* Can be Installed almost anywhere in PCBoard
* Small and will not take up much hard drive space
* Configurable Prompt and Text Messages
* Configurable Colors
* Rejects Invalid Phone Numbers such as 000-000-0000
* Rejects Incomplete Phone Numbers such as 717-751-3
* Checks for valid Phone Number Formats
* Calculates Age from Entered Date
* Does NOT require the ANSI emulation
* Rejects Movie Phone Numbers such as 555-555-1212
┌─────────────────────────────┐
│ III. Installing the Utility │
└─────────────────────────────┘
Unlike the Birth Date utility, there really is only TWO places where you
can install this utility. That would be the Business Phone and Voice
Phone prompts. This will lower the complications of installing this
utility. You probably want to install the Business Phone prompt first.
Use the following procedure to accomplish this:
* Execute the MKPCBTXT program
* Press F3 and enter 113
* Clear the Existing prompt with the Ctrl-End Key
* Enter an exclamation point (!) in the first column, followed immediately
by the program path and file name (eg. !\PPE\PHONE\PHONE.PPE DATA)
* Include the DATA, text file specification, after where you have specified
the program path and file name (check above example)
* Press ESC until you are out of the editor
Once you have completed that, the Phone Number Utility will then be
installed as the business prompt. You will probably also want to install
this program as the Home or Voice number prompt as well. Use the
following procedure to accomplish this:
* Execute the MKPCBTXT program
* Press F3 and enter 114
* Clear the Existing prompt with the Ctrl-End Key
* Enter an exclamation point (!) in the first column, followed immediately
by the program path and file name (eg. !\PPE\PHONE\PHONE.PPE VOICE)
* Include the VOICE, text file specification, after where you have specified
the program path and file name (check above example)
* Press ESC until you are out of the editor
Once you have completed that, the utility should be fully installed an
ready for executing.

│ IV. Command Line Parameters │
└─────────────────────────────┘
The Phone Number Utility only has one command line parameter which is
required for execution. This would be the text file specification.
Included with the program is a file with the filename PHONETXT. This
file will tell the program what to print on the screen, so you can
configure the color display, and what the program displays by editing
this file with the PHONETXT.EXE program included in the archive.
!D:\PPE\PHONE\PHONE.PPE DATA
The above explains how the DATA parameter is used. This will display the
DATA information in the text file. If you were to use VOICE instead, it
will display the VOICE information in the text file.
┌─────────────────────────────┐
│ V. Changing Colors and Text │
└─────────────────────────────┘
As mentioned earlier, you can use the PHONETXT.EXE program to modify the
text display. This program will emulate MKPCBTXT.EXE to make things
easier for you. You can insert color codes or alter them to configure
thing the way you would like to have them.
Color codes can be entered in these messages and with the error messages,
you can also use the PCBoard @BEEP@ code for a beep warning.
