The Mad King's Dungeon Version 1.00 Copyright 1994
programed by Charles Marchant
_____________________________________________________________________________
INTRODUCTION
Seems one dark night a band of the kings men wondered drunk upon your
sleeping family. They then raped, pillaged, and burnt them, their lands
and livestock to the ground. As fate would have it you were at the fair that
night, getting drunk of your pathetic wages you get as a dung shoveler at a
nearby stable and came upon the gruesome spectacle that morning.
Crying in the ash and blood you swear to kill the king in order to gain
revenge for your family.
Grabbing what you can you set out to the castle to extract revenge from
the hide of the king when your met by a ghost. The ghost tells you his
sad story of death at the kings hands and offers some advice to you.

Player Classes
There are 5 classes to choose from in MKD and each class has it's own
special skills and bonuses. They are as follows.
1) Warrior This is the generic class, strong and healthy. They start
with more body points and greater power then the other
classes, can bash down doors easier and wield the best
armor in the game. It takes less exp to gain a new level
then the other 4 classes.
2) Thief Thieves start with greater speed, luck and agility then
the other classes. They have a greater chance to pick
locks and steal gold then the other. They can sneak about
unseen and attempt to murder other pc/npc.
3) Monk Monks are the hand to hand fighters of the game. They have
both kicking and punching skills that none of the other
classes have. They also have a high luck which helps
in defense against magic.
4) Mage Mages are one of the two spell weavers of the game. They
have greater knowledge then the others and can develop
some very destructive spells that can even burn it's
victims armor and weapons.
5) Cleric Clerics are the "healers" of the game although they also
have some very strong combat spells. But the use of them
slowly turns them to evil. Clerics once they reach level
15 can be the most deadly of pc's in the game with the
ability to 'steal soul' from their victim. Clerics have
a greater wisdom of the other classes.

TOWN
The town is the hub of the game, here you go to the different shops and
town hall to conduct your business of buying and selling items both wanted
and unused.
You can:
Go to the Blacksmiths.
Go to the Inn of the Lonesome Winch.
Go to the Magic Shop.
Go to the Guild Hall.
Go to the Town Square.
Confront the king.
Go to the Dungeon.
Exit to the Mundane World.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Blacksmith Shop
Here in the blacksmith shop you can buy items of armor, cloths and weapons
along with selling them. All items you buy will be of the base type and
in excellent condition. When you sale items they will be priced on their
magic abilities and condition. The price will change depending on your
looks and knowledge. You may also repair items here which is very important,
once a item is junk it loses all its abilities and magic affects and is
worth zero gold.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Magic Shop
The magic shop most likely will be your second most visited place while
in the game. It is here were you can buy potions and scrolls of all sorts
to augment your abilities and heal you when your hurt. There is even a
scroll of recall to teleport you safely from the dungeon at no lose of
experience to you. You can identify and enchant items here, along
with removing the curse from items you can't seem to ditch. Of course
all prices very depending on condition and abilities of the item you
wish to enchant, sale, buy, identify or remove curse from.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Inn of the Lonesome Winch
Here is where you will buy the food and drink you need to remain health
in the dungeon. If you are starving or parched you will gain neither
health or mana back. Each food or drink has its own different fill
value and some can even cause drunkenness which can lower your attack
and defend value while raising your luck. You will never be poisoned from
items bought here, unlike food and drink in the dungeon which you can
never be sure of.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Guild Hall
The guild hall is where you will go when you feel you have enough
experience to gain a level in your chosen profession. If you can
gain a level your abilities, mana and health will raise according
to your class. If you fail to gain a level you will be told how
much more adventuring you need to gain it.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Town Hall
This is where you can read the daily news and see who has entered the
castle or gained a level or even died in the dungeon. You can take
a look at the king's trophy wall and see a list off all that failed
to kill him and what level and class they were when they died. This
is useful in judging when you should make your attempt upon his life.
You can also scan, read and post public or private bulletins to other
players or to everyone. If you want to post to everyone place ALL in
the to whom field while posting. You can view your full status, what
items you are wearing and all the affects that are on you.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Confront the King
This is the goal of the game. Once you choose this option there is
no turning back! You will win or die! If you happen to kill the king
your player and all it's abilities and items will become the new king.
You will then start over with a new character upon your next visit to
town. In this way the king will always become stronger and harder to
kill, making the game even more challenging each time you face the king.
_____________________________________________________________________________
The Dungeon!
The dungeon contains 20 levels all branching from a central staircase.
Each level of the dungeon is filled with any of 70 different rooms.
Some rooms are dark some are not. Groups of rooms are connected by
corridors which can be dark also.
Doors
There are over 8 different types of doors in the dungeon ranging from
plane wood to stone. Each door can be affected by up to 8 different
affects, from stuck to locked to hidden and others. The affects and
type of doors changes your abilities to see them and open them.
Some doors are even one way.
Rooms
There are 70 different types of rooms in the dungeon and each room can
have it's own set of affects ranging from no monsters to no evil to death!
Rooms can be lit or magically dark or just plain dark.
Monsters
Monsters are just like pc's, they can wear items and even equip items
they may pickup while moving through the dungeon. They have alignments
and action flags. A good number of monsters have special attacks ranging
from spells to breath weapons. No two monster are ever the same and each
level you go down the monsters increase in abilities.
Items
Items gain in power each level you go down. Some items are bad and some
are good, more often the bad ones are also cursed and can't be removed or
dropped while the curse is still on you. Some very powerful items have
egos and can be stubborn to wear or wield. Wands, rods and staffs will
not be known tell they are used and will not have a name other the
wand, staff or rod until they are identified.
Dungeon Movement
To move in the dungeon have your number lock key on, use 4 to turn left
6 to turn right and 8 to move forward one. The scroll box will display
all visible exits around you. The 3d display will show you up to 3 squares
ahead of you and 1 to both sides. When it's dark or your blind you will
not see anything in the 3d display and every exit will show as to dark to
see.
Dungeon Time
Dungeon time is on a 10 second pulse. Every pulse all monster, items
and affects are updated. Monsters move, pickup items or equip them.
Items with affect timers such as lanterns, spells, ect are handled.
Players heal and grow more hungry, thirsty or less drunk. Players that
are poisoned take damage.
Combat runs on a 2 second pulse. This mean all monsters you are fighting
go through the combat stage, use special attacks, items or cast spells.
If your on a fast modem you can slip multiple attacks in while a monster
is waiting its turn.

Hints for New Players
As a new player some aspects of the game might strike you as overwhelming
but in time you will come to understand and even be glad the game is
structured the way it is. One of the most common points is the large amount
of armor available. Let me explain this, you can wear up to 19 items at
once. The areas are as follows.
HEAD NECK_1 NECK_2 CHEST BODY ARMS HANDS WRIST_1
WRIST_2 FINGER_1 FINGER_2 LEGS FEET WAIST WIELD_1
WIELD_2 HOLD BACK SHIELD
All items can have up to 30 different affects on them at one time. As you
play and run into monsters that breath fire, curse, or do massive damage
you will be glade that your opal ring gives you protection against fire
and your white cloak is protection from evil. You goal is to slowly find
the best items and combination of items to wear. You don't have to
deck yourself out at level one, take your time buy a peace now and then
and improve them as you have extra gold. The first level is hard but
a good potion of armor and chain vest can see you through it to level
two. Here's just a sample of the affects available.
Power Knowledge Wisdom Agility Speed Luck Looks Body
Mana Move Armor To Hit To Damage Age Sex Gold Level
Exp
There is also a large range of item types:
Wand Staff Rod Scroll 1 Handed Weapon Armor Drink
Container Food Key Potion Cloths Treasure Trash
Light Gold Boat Bow Missile Crossbow Bolt 2 Handed Weapon
Arrow
All this was done not to confuse you but to bring a larger realm of
playability to the game and give you the chance to actually customize
your pc.
Now some good advice for your first trip in the game. Buy a good weapon
such as a carving knife, it's base damage is 3 to 4 points and if
you have two of them and say at 50+ power your minimum damage when you hit
is 5+3+3 or 11 and your max is 13, not bad for first level. Also
purchase one good peace of armor such as chain mail vest. Hope on into
the magic shop and buy a few healing potions and a recall scroll or
two. Then buy a wand, any wand bought from the magic shop is of
magic missiles and can be used in combat very effectively. As you find
items in the dungeon try them out, if their good use them if not
ditch them. If you encounter a dark room leave it the way you came
in and go buy a lantern, it's good for 400 seconds of exploration.
If you get lost read the scroll of recall and if you don't that then
pray as a last resort! It takes half your exp to use and will get you
out of any fight or condition your in.
The rest is up to you to find and discover. Enjoy and I hope you
are one day able to become The Mad King himself!!
Thanks, Charles
