1. Hydroponics--Bibliography. I. Title
aZ5073.A37 no.91-02.HYDROPONICS
Reports that hydroponically grown crops mature faster and
produce higher yields have attracted the attention of
commercial growers as well as hobbyists. What exactly is
hydroponics? In the 1930's, the term was coined by a
California researcher, Dr. William F. Gericke, to refer to a
method of growing plants without soil. Soilless culture, bag
culture, water culture, nutrient film technique, nutriculture,
gravel culture, sand culture, aggregate culture, and
aeroponics are additional terms used for various methods of
growing plants without soil. All of these methods providethe
roots of the plant with water, oxygen and nutrients.
Depending on the soilless growing method chosen, the plants
may be grown in pots, bags, beds or troughs with a nonsoil,
inert medium (sand, gravel, rockwool, styrofoam, perlite,
vermiculite, etc.) supporting the roots. As with growing
crops in soil, light, water, nutrients, temperature, air, pH,
pests and diseases must be monitored. Hydroponic techniques
are best applied where no suitable soil is available or where
space is limited. For example, hydroponic cultivation in
desert areas, space shuttle experiments, or city balconies
seems an appropriate use of this technology.
Anyone who contemplates growing plants without soil should be
aware that such methods provide less margin for grower error
than do conventional methods. When nutrient, pest, or disease
problems arise they must be quickly solved or the entire crop
may be jeopardized. Also, unfortunately, this innovative
technique will not become widespread as long as equipment and
operating costs remain relatively high.
