High Voltage! Software (TM) Presents:
FOOD WARS VERSION 1.00
(C) Copyright 1994 By Michael Russo
All Rights Reserved
DISCLAIMER
----------
Use this program at your own risk. The author of this program can not be
responsible for any damage that may happen to your computer, equipment,
software, or social life by use of this program. Many hours have gone into
the writing of this game and to the best of my knowledge it should not harm
your system in any way. However, if it should act in an unexpected way, the
author can not be responsible for damages.
Please note: It is illegal to modify any of the files that come with
Food Wars. Anyone who does will be procsecuted for violating copyright laws.
SHAREWARE
---------
Food Wars is shareware. You may (and are encouraged) to distribute this
file in it's original form. You may not modify any of the files in any way.
You may try out Food Wars for a reasonable period of time. If you like it,
then you are required to register it with the author. If you do not plan
to register it, then you must delete the file. See the end of this doc for
more information on registering Food Wars.
DOCS
----
The following docs should have been included with the package you got when
you downloaded this game:
SYSOP.DOC - You are reading that now! Setup guide.
PLAYER.DOC - Instructions on how to play Food Wars.
REGISTER.DOC - Print this out and mail it in with the correct
fee in order to register this game.
DATA FILES
----------
Your Food Wars package should have come with the following data files:
MAP.DAT TEACHERS.DAT
MESSAGES.DAT GIRLS.DAT
MONSTER.DAT GAME.DAT
WRESTLE.DAT TODD.DAT
DEVICES.DAT 1.MSG
FWARS.CFG CMAP.ANS
OPEN.RIP BORDER.RIP
if any of the above files are missing then the program will not run.
RIP GRAPHICS
------------
Food Wars is not a RIP graphics game yet, although we are working on
it. There is, however, limited RIP support. If Food Wars detects that
a user is in RIP mode, it will send a RIP screen at the start as a
greeting, then it will place a standard RIP border around the rest of
the game. There are a few problems with RIP messing up the ANSI display.
All I can say is we are aware and are working on it..
GETTING STARTED
---------------
The first thing to do is create a directory for Food Wars and copy all
of the Food Wars files into that directory. If you are running WildCat, for
example, the directory path might be C:\WC30\WCWORK\NODE1\FWARS.
Once you have all the files in their own directory, edit the file
FWARS.CFG to suit your system. This config file contains everything you
need to know inside of it in the form of comments. Follow the instructions
carefully.
Now you need to create a batch file to run Food Wars. Using WildCat as
an example again, your batch file might look like:
@ECHO OFF
CD C:\WC30\WCWORK\NODE1\FWARS
FWARS /PC:\WILDCAT\WCWORK\NODE1 /N1
EXIT
/Pyyy - This specifies the complete path to your user information file.
/Nx - This specifies which node number.
/L - This tells Food Wars to run in local mode.
/E - Expanded Memory Specification for increased performance on
systems with over 1 meg of memory.
/Bxxxxx - Used to lock baud rate at xxxxx. You can do so with this
switch, or by your FWARS.CFG file.
That is really all there is to it. Modify your BBS to include Food Wars
in the doors section and it is ready to go.
MULTI-NODE
----------
Food Wars is NOT, I repeat, NOT a multi-node game. Perhaps if there is
strong interest I will make it one in the future, but right now it will die
a horrible death if two players try to enter at the same time. Make sure to
have your BBS check to see if the door is in use by another node before
allowing a user to enter. In WildCat you can do this in MAKEWILD. If there
are a lot of you out there who run boards that can not check to see if a
door is in use on another node, then let me know and I will add that
feature to the game. I am assuming other systems can check as WildCat does.
You can run Food Wars on each node, of course, as long as two users can
not enter at the same time. If you need to specify a non-standard IRQ you
can do so with your FWARS.CFG file. The instructions on how to do this
are in the FWARS.CFG file.
If you want, you can use environmental variables to make your life
easier. To do this just add the command SET WCNODEID = X in your batch files
that call up the nodes to your BBS, just sub the node number for X in each
batch file. Now you can call Food Wars like this...
FWARS /PC:\WILDCAT\WCWORK\NODE%WCNODEID% /N%WCNODEID%
Now your system will place your node number in place of the %WCNODEID%.
Any BBS system can use these variables, not just Wildcat systems.
CRIPPLED?
---------
Yes, this door is crippled. It will not, however, expire on you... and
you will not get any big, irritating delays. You can set this game up and
go away knowing the game will continue to run fine until you decide to
register or delete the game. As a Sysop, I always just delete games that
expire. I kept all that in mind when deciding what the registration
incentive should be. OK, here are the feature you get when you register..
1) Your name will show up on the title screen as the registered owner, and
your BBS name will also be displayed on the title screen and upon
exiting the game.
2) The Underground will be active. The Underground is a VERY important,
secret store that the players can find and buy special items from.
The Underground sells better weapons, armor, and equipment, and makes
playing Food Wars a lot more fun.
3) The last feature is the ability to proceed past level 15. In the
unregistered version if a player tries to go past level 15 the school
bully will show up and beat him up. Registration will allow players
to proceed all the way to level 42 where they can win the game.
WINNING
-------
When a player wins the game, the game will not reset. Instead, that
player will get their name listed on the Hall of Fame, and his/her character
will be set back to level 1. This way everyone can play at their own pace.
If you want to completely reset the game you will have to delete all files and
re-install the game from your original .ZIP archive.
TROUBLE
-------
If you are having problems getting Food Wars to run then it is probably
your best bet to get in touch with me. Since the game is a new one, I am
not aware of any common problems that occur. One thing you can try, if the
game is acting wierd you might try using a fossil driver. Some systems might
not like the internal comm routines. If you are getting an ERROR 2, that
means that the program can't find a data file it is looking for. In this
case, make sure all the data files listed in the start of this doc are in the
Food Wars directory.
PLAYER LIMIT
------------
The game, at this time, is set to a limit of 50 players at one time. If
this proves to be a problem on your system then I suggest running a second
version of the game. The game will automatically weed out inactive players
after 30 days.
MAINTENANCE
-----------
Food Wars will automatically run the daily maitenance with the first caller
of the day. No need to worry, it takes care of itself.
REGISTERING FOOD WARS
---------------------
To register Food Wars just fill out REGISTER.FRM and mail it with a $15.00
check or money order to:
MICHAEL RUSSO
1959 LAKE BOULEVARD #135
DAVIS, CA 95616
All checks and money orders must be made out to MICHAEL RUSSO. If you
wish, you can call my BBS instead and use your VISA/MC/AMEX/JBC to register
Food Wars. This is a little quicker way, however I can't give you your
registration code until the processors clear the charge and send me the
check. That can take up to 48 hours. You can elect to have the code sent
to you in the mail, or you can call my BBS and I will have the code waiting
for you online. Either way. If you want the BBS option, make sure you
include a password to use so I can have your account ready for you when you
call.
SUPPORT
-------
If you need support, you can get it through my BBS. I have full plans to
continue releasing new versions of Food Wars and will support the game
as long as I can. Of course, the more interest shown in the game by others,
the more interest I will have in the game. If you need support please call:

MISC COMMENTS
-------------
This is my first door and I really hope it goes over well. I tried hard
to write a game that was well balanced and fun to play. I also tried to
make the game both easy for beginners, and challenging for experienced
game players. Since this is my first game, I would be VERY happy to hear
your comments... even if they are, "Your Game Sucks, Man." If you have an
opinion on how to improve it... LET ME KNOW!! In the future I plan to add
support for both sexes. (Females will have to play a male character right
now.) Also, I plan to add RIP graphics (next major release), and I want to
add tree forts that players can build as a way to better protect themselves.
If you are going to keep this game.. PLEASE register it. I am a full-time
student and it took many valuable hours to program this game. If you intend
to register this game, but don't have the cash at this time, you are more
than welcome to leave up the unregistered version until you do have the money.
I know 30 days doesn't always do it.. so just be reasonable. If you are
offered an illegal code to regiater this game PLEASE reject it and let me
know who offered it to you. At least reject it. I hope $15.00 is a fair
price for this game. I looked at my own favorite games and deducted $5.00
from their price. I feel it is fair, and hope you do too.
You have my thanks for giving Food Wars a try. I hope you like it. Feel
free to send me mail on the MSI HQ BBS.. my internet account there is..
