Dementia Wall V1.20
Copyright 1993, 1994
Written by: Galen Barnes
Written for IBM PC's & compatibles(gee what a surprise)
WHAT IS DEMENTIA WALL:
Dementia Wall is simple little program designed to allow your users to write
short mini-messages in their choice of colors and special characters. It
may seem like a silly concept but it's a popular one, many of my users who
wouldn't get caught dead in regular message areas use it regularly to say
whatever is on their minds. A program like this doesn't really even belong
with other games, so install it from you main menu and have fun!!!!
DISCLAIMER:
The author of Dementia Wall in no way warantees or claims liability for
damage that this program may cause to your system. The program was working
when it left my system and should not do any damage to your system. So, if
your Monitor sprouts legs and goes running off with your toaster then
that's your problem & you can't sue me for it. So THERE!!!!
LEGAL JUNK:
Dementia Wall and all it's files are the property of Galen Barnes and as such
are protected by U.S. & International Copyright laws. Dementia Wall may not
be re-released in any modified form without written permission of the
author. The author gives permission to anyone to supply unmodified copies
of this program in any medium you wish so long as you are not making a
profit directly from it. In other words, if you are selling it as a part of
a shareware package or charging the user directly for the download(instead
of charging for online time) then you must have direct written permission
from the author.
UPGRADING:
With this version there were some changes made in the data formats so if you
have an older version run the UPGRADE program in your DWALL directory before
attempting to run the new version.
CHANGES:
With this version I have added a file named BADWORD.TXT, this file is a file
of words you DON'T want your users to be able to use in their grafitti. The
program scans their grafitti when it's saved and replaces the words you don't
want with either junk or a replacement of your choice. Check BADWORD.TXT for
instructions on how to set it up.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Dementia Wall is a game designed with simplicity of installation & use in
mind. Dementia Wall requires about 200K of disk space and less than 200K
of memory to run, and is fully DesqView aware. Dementia Wall watches files
carefully and will work simultaneously in several windows at once as long as
share is installed. Dementia Wall NO LONGER requires that your system use a
fossil, by default it will auto-detect the fossil and if it doesn't find one
it will use the COM port. To install Dementia Wall simply decompress it
into the directory you want it in & run it from the command line by entering
DWALL Local. At this point the program will ask you for your name, enter
the same name that your BBS will be passing to the program when you run it
so that you can use the sysop functions directly from the BBS. Dementia Wall
requires that you be the first person to run it, if you do not do this then
the first player to use it will have sysop privledges and you'll have to
reset it. All it needs now is a standard DORINFOx.DEF file to run. You can
either place the DORINFOx.DEF file in the same directory as Dwall or you can
include a command line parameter showing Dwall the directory you want it to
look in for the DORINFO file. The only other parameter you need to run it
is the node number that it is running on. Below are some examples of
typical ways to call Dementia Wall:
Example:
If your system creates Dorinfo2.def then you would call it like this:
Dwall 2
If you want Dwall to use Dorinfo1.Def in you BBS directory try this:
Dwall 1 C:\BBS
Should you want to run it locally from the command line simply enter:
Dwall Local
and the computer will ask you for all the info it needs to let you run it
locally.
Should the Fossil Auto-detect fail for some reason you can force the program
to use the direct Com port by calling it with a parameter of
-COM<PortNum>,IRQ<IRQnum> The IRQ number is optional and only needs to be
used if your system uses a NON-Standard IRQ for one of the ports. At this
time only COM1-4 are supported in this mode.
Finally, if your system cannot create a Dorinfo file I have added 3
parameters to let you run it without using Dorinfo at all. These
parameters are:
-F<FirstName> The User's First Name
-L<LastName> The User's Last Name
-T<TimeLeft> The User's time left in minutes.
Therefore Dwall can be run without a dorinfo file by calling it like this:
Dwall 1 -FGalen -LBarnes -T100
That should start the program for a user named Galen Barnes on COM1 with 100
minutes left. Good luck and have fun!!!
MAINTENANCE:
DWALL keeps track of the date internally and requires no external
maintenance. Everything is done automatically each night. However, you may
want to delete INUSE.DAT periodically(when nobody is online) to assure that
DWALL's self maintenance continues to run properly.
USING DEMENTIA WALL:
This program should be pretty easy to use and quite straight-forward in it's
presentation. Still, questions are bound to pop up so I thought I'd include
a complete set of instructions to help answer those questions.
Main Menu:
N - New Postings - This will display a list of the postings since the
user's last logon.
R - Read All the Posts - This allows the user to read all the postings
starting with any one they choose.
W - Write Something - When chosen this will give the user a prompt
allowing them to write some grafitti. They will be able to write
between 1 and 10 lines depending on the sysops setup(see sysop
options for more info). These lines can be edited using the
standard commands offered in most full-page editors. Alternately a
user can press Ctrl-N and turn his Num-Lock on and be able to use
his numeric keypad to move the cursor around, to enter numbeers
under this they will have to press Ctrl-N again. To Change
Foreground and Background colors and display special characters,
they need only press the keys indicated by the instructions at the
top of their screen. A user does not have to fill all the lines
offered by Dementia Wall, if they press return at the beginning of
any line the computer will assume that they have completed entering
their grafitti.
D - Define Keys & Colors - Choosing this will give the user a list of the
keys that they use to select Foreground & Background Colors and the
key to used to add Special Characters to their Posts. Users may
select any standard(non-function & non-control) key as a control
key. Caution should be taken as the system will allow ANY standard
key. Another function of this option is to allow users to set
default foreground and background colors for posts they make.
C - Customize Your Name - This allows a user to customize the name that is
displayed with their posts. Their name can be edited in the same
manner as as a message and Colors and Special characters are
allowed.
Q - Quit Dementia Wall - Pretty self-explanatory.
S - Sysop Options - This allows the sysop to edit the setup, posts, and
users on Dementia Wall. As the sysop you get quite a bit of power
to do this, your options are:
E - Edit Users - Choosing this will pop up a window displaying all
the stats of any user and allow you to edit them as necessary.
When you first start editing the system will list the first
user, from here you can use the arrow keys or the . and ,
keys to move back and forth through the userlist, you may
also choose a user by manually entering the number of the user
you want. There are(of course) a few options available to you
at this point, they are:
N - Name Search - This allows you to enter a name(or partial
name) to search the userlist for. The name search will
find the first user that matches the text you've asked
to search for, it will then ask you if this is the user
you want, if you answer no the computer will continue
the search until you answer yess or run out of users.
D - Delete a User - This will delete the current user from the
userlist, purging all messages they have entered in the
process.
ENTER - Edit the User - Pressing ENTER will move the cursor to
the data about the current user, you may move up and
down through it by using the arrow keys or the + and -
keys. To change an item of the users data press enter
and the computer will let you change it, most of this is
pretty self-explanatory but two options aren't. The
first is LastOn, if you ever need to change this make
sure that you enter the date in the EXACT same format as
is displayed. The other is Access, there are 4
different access levels and they are pretty obvious,
SYSOP allows access to Everything, Read/Write is the
normal access level, Read Only allows the user to only
read posts and not create them. Finally, Twit revokes a
users privledge to use Dementia wall. When you've
finished editing the user press ESC and you'll be
returned to the user selection options.
ESC - Return to Sysop Menu - Self Explanatory.
C - Change/Delete offensive postings - This gives you a menu much
like the User Editor, you may use it to flip through the posts
and edit or delete posts which you find offensive, there are 4
options you have once you decide to delete a post, they are:
<ENTER> - Edit Post - Choosing this will allow you to directly
edit the grafitti, letting you change the text and
colors the use has entered.
D - Delete Post - Kills the message.
R - Delete and Read/Only - Kills the message and sets
the access level of the person responsible to
Read/Only.
T - Delete and Twit - Kills the message and Twits the
author.
When you have finished your deletions press ESC to return to
the Sysop Menu.
L - Lines Per Post - This allows you to set the maximum number of
lines a user may have in a post, the minimum setting is 1 and
the maximum is 10.
D - Days to keep inactive users - This sets the number of days to
keep a user that hasn't logged on. The range is from 0 to 255
days. Setting it to 0 tells the system not to delete for
inactivity.
# - Number of Days to keep a post - Sets how long to keep a post,
the range is 0 to 255 days and setting it to 0 tells the system
not to delete by days.
M - Maximum Postings - This allows you to set the maximum number of
posts your system collect before beginning nightly deletions.
The minimum setting is 1 and the maximum is 1000.
A - Allow Anonymous Posts - If you set this to NO the system will
not allow users to post anonymously, a setting of YES(default)
means that anonymous posts are allowed.
S - Show Date of Posting - tells the system to show the User the
date each post was made. Users can still turn the date display
off individually once it is turned on.
V - View Real Names - A setting of YES will cause the system to
display the Real names of users as well as their Customized
name to the Sysop when he's reading posts.
W - Wipe the Wall Clean - This will remove all the grafitti from the
wall and start you with a clean wall.
Q - Quit - Returns you to the Main Menu
That should just about do it, if you have any further questions you can
always contact me with them.
