12-16-93 Carrier/Connect
When a plain 2400 modem, one with no V42bis, or an RPI modem
(software/hardware V42bis) is in answer mode, it gets a CONNECT as soon as
both modems agree on CARRIER speed. However the modem with V42bis isn't
finished negotiating yet, and keeps sending signals to the 2400 modem. The
answering modem cannot interpret these signals, and may hang up, send 'odd'
messages to the host software, or some other problem may occur. So when
calling a plain modem you often must use &Q6 (with buffering) or &Q0 (no
buffering, direct mode) to get a connect with a plain 2400 modem.
