  141.        IGI255 Version 3.5 is designed to read IGI text files created
  142.        with the Family Search Program at your local Family History
  143.        Center and allow them to be printed out using 55 single line
  144.        entries per page vs the FSP's 12-13.
  145.  
  146.        Completely menu driven, IGI255 will simply scan IGI text files
  147.        and create a separate database with the information it finds.
  148.        The database is then sorted, viewed, printed or copied as
  149.        desired.  No printer is required.  File contents may be sorted
  150.        and viewed on screen.  The database files may also be copied and
  151.        combined to another file in .DBF or ascii text form.
  152.  
  153.        Four pre-defined sorts are available or create up to 9 additional
  154.        at one time.  An excellent filtering option is also available.
  155.  
  156.        There is no formal charge for IGI255 Version 3.5 - the Church of
  157.        Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is generous enough to let us
  158.        all use their facilities, equipment & IGI data at no charge - may
  159.        this program begin to return the favor, and, I ask two favors:
  160.  
  161.             1)  The next time you walk into your local family
  162.                 history center, say "thanks" to the volunteers
  163.                 who are donating their time to help us all.

  165.             2)  Send me a picture postcard from where you live.

  172.        IGI255, Version 3.5 is being released as Freeware, NOT public
  173.        domain or Shareware - this means, simply put, that I retain all
  174.        the rights to the program but anyone is more than welcome to use
  175.        it for their personal needs.  Anyone wishing to distribute the
  176.        program to others may do so and access a reasonable and normal
  177.        charge for disk media, mailer and postage.  Commercial computer
  178.        on-line services may allow appropriate distribution through the
  179.        normal course of their business.

  206.                         Family Search Program Downloads

  209.        The Family Search Program's IGI routine features a "Family"
  210.        search as well as a "Marriage" search, including the ability to
  211.        "filter" both.  Each search may also be set for a "Similar" or an
  212.        "Exact" surname search.  IGI255 will process IGI text files
  213.        created in any FSP search and/or filter combination.
  214.  
  215.        Naturally a text file consisting of information from both types
  216.        of searches would gather all available possibilities for a given
  217.        surname.  Unfortunately this creates an extremely large amount of
  218.        duplicate entries in the text file.  IGI255 cures this "problem"
  219.        rather easily by simply removing the duplicates, automatically.
  220.  
  221.        When downloading IGI information to be processed with IGI255,
  222.        there are only two requirements to remember:
  223.  
  224.        First, GEDCOM's produced by the FSP are NOT handled by IGI255.
  225.        You MUST use it's ascii text file feature.  There is a shareware
  226.        program available by the name of GIPSI which will process gedcom
  227.        type files for you.  NOTE: The .DBF files created by GIPSI are
  228.        NOT compatible with IGI255.
  229.  
  230.        The only other requirement is that you DO NOT name your text
  231.        files with an extension .COM, .EXE, .DBF, .SYS
  232.  
  233.                            OR WITH A 3rd LETTER OF X
  234.  
  235.                  filename.CQM is valid, filename.COM is NOT
  236.                  filename.NTY is valid, filename.NTX is NOT
  237.  
  238.        IGI255's point and shoot file selection routine does NOT display
  239.        any file that has one of the above extensions.  Names such as
  240.        .IGU, .IGE, .IGG meaning the United States, England, and Germany
  241.        are valid but whatever naming convention (.TXT, .DOC, .IGI, etc.)
  242.        suits your needs is fine.

  244.        Apparently the Family Search Program can be configured by each
  245.        individual Family History Center to produce "text" files in
  246.        various word processing formats.  IGI255 SHOULD be able to read
  247.        any of these text files created by any FSP.
  248.  
  249.        IGI255 was designed and tested using text files created by
  250.        version 2.09 and 2.13 of the Family Search Program. It scans the
  251.        text file for certain text strings in certain places so it is
  252.        possible that, depending on the configuration/installation of
  253.        your FHC's program, variances are possible.  If you have blank
  254.        lines or what appears to be information where it shouldn't be,
  255.        contact me at once and the appropriate modifications can be made.

  278.        This version of IGI255 was initially released in March of 1992
  279.        and the "zip" file IGI25535 contained three files:
  280.  
  281.           IGI255  .EXE  -  the executable program, version 3.5
  282.           SAMPLE  .IGI  -  a sample of an actual IGI text file
  283.           IGI25535.NFO  -  this documentation in ascii text form
  284.  
  285.        There is no formal "installation" program available for IGI255.
  286.  
  287.        Create a directory on your hard drive to contain the these files,
  288.        as well as the files that the program will create, and "unzip"
  289.        them to that directory.  A specific name for the directory is not
  290.        required and may be whatever suits the user.  IGI255 is
  291.        recommended.
  292.  
  293.        Advanced computer users will understand that the program file
  294.        IGI255.EXE file may be placed in a utility or program directory
  295.        in the "DOS path".  IGI text files downloaded from the Family
  296.        Search Program may also be kept in a different directory.
  297.  
  298.        However, it is extremely important to remember that
  299.  
  300.  
  301.              FILES CREATED BY THE PROGRAM WILL BE CREATED IN
  302.              THE DIRECTORY FROM WHICH THE PROGRAM WAS BEGUN.
  303.  
  304.  
  305.        Keeping all of the files in their own specific directory or
  306.        subdirectory will naturally prevent confusion.
  307.  
  308.        The sampler text file, SAMPLE.IGI, is an actual IGI text file
  309.        downloaded from the Family Search Program.  It is being included
  310.        so that you can see how the program works.
  311.  
  312.        IGI255 is designed for use on a hard drive but files can be
  313.        processed from a floppy drive - but is MUCH slower.  If at all
  314.        possible, use the hard drive.

  343.        To begin the program simply type IGI255 at the DOS prompt.
  344.  
  345.        The first time IGI255 is run, the path for the IGI text files
  346.        will be set to the current directory (the directory from which
  347.        the program was begun) and 3 files will be created.  IGI255.sys
  348.        stores the default information used by the program.  IGI255ST.sys
  349.        and IGI255ST.srt contain the "state" names and abbreviations.
  350.  
  351.        If the IGI text files are kept in a different directory or sub-
  352.        directory, select 'Text File Location' at the Main Menu and type
  353.        in the appropriate path and file spec.
  354.

  356.        Arrow Keys with a Twist
  357.        ───────────────────────
  358.  
  359.        IGI255 generally uses the RIGHT ARROW key as the ENTER key and
  360.        the LEFT ARROW key as the ESC key.  This is rather convenient
  361.        after becoming familiar with the program and there is no way to
  362.        disable the feature.

  365.        Deleting Unneeded Files
  366.        ───────────────────────
  367.  
  368.        If a "<DEL active>" is shown on the bottom of a screen, files on
  369.        that list can be deleted.  Press the DEL key once to bring up the
  370.        warning screen and press the DEL key a second time to actually
  371.        erase the file.  Any other key will cancel the request.
  372.  
  373.        The 'View/Print' file selection screen will show a small diamond
  374.        "tag" next to the sort description if that sort file exists for
  375.        that .DBF.  This sort file can be deleted by hi-liting the sort
  376.        name and pressing the DEL key.  A warning screen will then
  377.        appear.  Press the DEL key a second time to erase the sort file
  378.        or press any other key to cancel the request.

  381.        Quit to DOS - Stopping the Program

  384.        Ending the program is as simple as pressing ESC while at the Main
  385.        Menu or hi-liting quit and pressing ENTER or the RIGHT ARROW key.
  386.        Return to the Main Menu from any point in the program by
  387.        continually pressing the ESC key.

  405.        Disk Space
  406.        ──────────

  408.        Disk space is the only limiting factor for processing files.  Not
  409.        only is space needed for the IGI text file and the resulting .DBF
  410.        file but the size of each sort file must also be considered.
  411.  
  412.        For example, text files for the 8,000 plus HARRIS's in VA were
  413.        created by the Family Search Program.  These text files consume
  414.        over 3 meg of disk space and the resulting combined .DBF file is
  415.        about 1.5 meg.  Each sort created an index file ranging from 600K
  416.        to 900K - over a total of 6 megabytes of disk space was used.  Of
  417.        course once printing was completed each of the .DBF and sort
  418.        files could be deleted.

  420.                      ALWAYS, REPEAT, ALWAYS KEEP A BACK-UP
  421.                         COPY OF YOUR ORIGINAL TEXT FILE
  422.  
  423.        If a "disk full" error occurs during the "indexing" (sorting)
  424.        process you will get a "retry" prompt at the top of the screen.
  425.        Press N to abort the program - there will probably be a temporary
  426.        work file in your root directory that needs to be deleted.  It
  427.        will generally have a strange looking name of all characters,
  428.        possibly digits, but will be unique enough that you will know it
  429.        doesn't belong and can be deleted.

  432.        Problems with "Snow"
  433.        ────────────────────
  434.  
  435.        IGI255 has been tested on AT and XT class machines with MONO,
  436.        CGA, EGA and VGA which have suffered no ill effects.  CGA
  437.        monitors are notorious for "snow" - to cure this problem, at the
  438.        DOS prompt before running the program, type:
  439.  
  440.                        SET CLIPPER=S1
  441.  
  442.        exactly as shown.  Assuming that there is "environment space"
  443.        available, this will cure the problem.  Once "set", this command
  444.        will remain in the computer's memory until the machine is reset
  445.        or turned off.  Place this command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so
  446.        that it doesn't have to be retyped it each time the computer is
  447.        turned on or reset.

  449.        If your computer indicates an "out of environment space" error
  450.        when attempting to use this command, please refer to a DOS manual
  451.        for instructions to increase the environment's space.

  470.        Computer Incompatibility

  473.        Although there is only one known case, one style of computer
  474.        ignored the file delete option in an earlier version of IGI255. A
  475.        small change was also made to the IGI255.SYS file but the program
  476.        will adjust the existing one automatically.  If any problems are
  477.        encountered with the program starting, simply erase the file
  478.        IGI255.SYS and rerun the program.  If any problems persist,
  479.        contact me for a corrected version.

  481.        Upgrades, Now and Then
  482.        ──────────────────────
  483.  
  484.        Every attempt is made to keep IGI255 a simple-to-use program for
  485.        general use while expanding the underlying features for those of
  486.        wanting to do extremely complex manipulations of IGI data.
  487.  
  488.        There are still some features that could be added to the program
  489.        and the flow of moving from one screen to another could be
  490.        improved.  At this time the next release date is unknown.
  491.  
  492.        "The suggestion box is hanging on the wall grinnin' like a
  493.        Cheshire Cat and a I'm hungry feed me gleam in it's eye..."

  495.        All comments, good, bad or ugly, about IGI255 are welcomed.
  496.        Testing has been continuous but saturation at times tends to
  497.        overlook the obvious.  If you notice anything that needs fixing,

  507.        I do monitor both the National Genealogical and Gensoft Echos on
  508.        a daily basis and Compuserve weekly (72607,2064).  The best time
  509.        to telephone is weekends or any weekday evening.
  510.  
  511.        The flexibility of IGI255 can be a tremendous asset but please
  512.        remember that it can also can lead to confusion.  Even those
  513.        extremely familiar with the program have known to get lost not
  514.        knowing what's tagged, marked and/or copied to what .DBF - plan
  515.        ahead and go slow and steady...when in doubt, just untag
  516.        everything, unmarked everything and start over.

  518.        In any case, I truly hope the program in some way helps you find
  519.        that missing link.

  542.        When IGI255 is begun, the first screen that to appear is the Main
  543.        Menu.  You must first 'Create' a .DBF file before you can 'View'
  544.        it but the options on the Main Menu are placed beginning with the
  545.        most frequently used.

  548.        hi-lite your choice and press ENTER or the RIGHT ARROW key.

  614.        One of the IGI255's finest features is it's ability to print out
  615.        a .DBF in almost any possible configuration.  Another handy to
  616.        have feature is the program's ability to interrupt a large multi-
  617.        page print session and resume it at a later date.
  618.  
  619.        Naturally, normal print options such as such as lines per page,
  620.        margin, header lines and footer lines can be defined.
  621.  
  622.        In addition, the ability to print marked duplicate entries as
  623.        well as a character to hi-light tagged entries can be designated.
  624.        Along with the option to define which fields are to be printed as
  625.        well as the length of each field, a custom print-out can be
  626.        easily created.
  627.  
  628.        The printer configuration can be modified from two points while
  629.        running the program.  First, from the Main Menu.  Select the
  630.        Printer/Date Setup option and another small menu will appear.
  631.        This menu will lead to either the Printer Setup Menu or the Event
  632.        Date Menu.  Hi-lite "Printer" and press ENTER.  The Printer Setup
  633.        Menu will then appear.

  635.        It is also possible to configure the printer by pressing F3 when
  636.        viewing a .DBF which will activate the Print Options Menu.  This
  637.        menu contains a option that leads directly to the Printer Setup
  638.        Menu.  Simply hi-lite the "Printer Setup" option and press ENTER.

  641.        Printer Set-up Menu
  642.  
  643.        The Printer Setup Menu consists of two screens.  The first is to
  644.        designate the printer's compressed code, lines per page, margin,
  645.        header and footer lines, whether or not duplicates are to be
  646.        printed, and the character to print if an entry is tagged.  Type
  647.        in the appropriate responses and press enter after each.
  648.  
  649.        The second screen is to define the length of each field that is
  650.        to be printed.  At either screen, pressing ESC will cancel any
  651.        changes and back up to the previous screen.

  669.                                Compressed Code
  670.  
  671.        Specifically designed for the standard compressed mode of
  672.        printing (17 CPI), you must tell the program what CHR number to
  673.        use.  Usually 15, this code represents the CHR number to activate
  674.        the compressed mode of the printer.  Older model of Okidata
  675.        printers will use the number 29.
  676.  
  677.        If neither work then leave it blank and force the printer to the
  678.        compressed or condensed mode prior to printing.  If there are no
  679.        buttons on a control panel of the printer to do this then simply
  680.        run a word processor or a program which allows condensed
  681.        printing.  Print something to force the printer into the
  682.        condensed mode, exit, and re-try IGI255.
  683.  
  684.        In other words, in most cases, once the printer is in the
  685.        condensed mode it will stay that way until a program tells it
  686.        different or the printer is turned off.

  688.                                 Lines Per Page
  689.  
  690.        Decide how many entries per page are to be printed and type in
  691.        that amount.  Generally, standard compressed print will allow 55-

  697.        page which also produces smaller print.

  699.                                     Margin
  700.  
  701.        The number typed in as a margin is the number of spaces that the
  702.        print out will be indented.  This can allow room to 3-hole punch
  703.        each page for insertion in a 3-ring binder.  Note, some printers
  704.        may require a decrease in the length of one or more fields in
  705.        order to prevent the print line wrapping around to the next line.

  707.               Header Line Characters and Bottom Line Characters

  709.        By default, the third line of the header on each page consists of
  710.        a dash and two spaces.  This can be changed by entering the
  711.        character(s) desired.  For example, a simple solid dashed line is
  712.        created by typing in --- or even ~~~.  If the computer in use is
  713.        an AT class or higher machine and the printer supports graphic
  714.        characters, try holding down the ALT key and then pressing the
  715.        numbers 205 to get a double graphic line.  Some rather unique
  716.        lines can be created.  Refer to a standard ASCII chart for
  717.        additional characters.

  746.        A tagged entry can be "hi-lited" during printing.  That is, a
  747.        character will be printed in the margin to the left of the entry.
  748.        The designated Tag Character will be printed.  If no tag
  749.        character is desired, simply leave the Tag Character field blank.

  751.        This can possibly be a rather handy feature.  For example, a list
  752.        of entries has been tagged for a particular first name but the
  753.        entire list is printed in state order.  Using a period "." as a
  754.        tag character, each of the tagged entries in the .DBF will be
  755.        printed with the "." in the left margin.  The list can quickly be
  756.        scanned for the tagged lines.  ASCII characters can be generated
  757.        with an AT class (or better) computer and a graphics printer.

  760.        Customizing Field Lengths
  761.  
  762.        The second screen of the Printer Setup Menu specifies which
  763.        fields are to be printed and the length of each.  The order that
  764.        the fields will be printed can also be defined.

  767.                          Changing the Length of a Field

  769.        Use the cursor keys to hi-lite the field to change and press
  770.        ENTER (or the RIGHT ARROW key).  Type in the number of spaces to
  771.        be printed for that field and the number of spaces to follow it

  773.        cancel them.  The entire line will again be hi-lighted and the
  774.        next field to be changed may be chosen.

  805.        screen and show the new order of the fields.  Pressing ENTER is
  806.        the only means of leaving the "Move Mode".

  813.        There are 3 options.  Hi-lite one and press ENTER.  The program
  814.        will then return to the Main Menu (or the Print Menu if activated
  815.        from there).  The first, Cancel will ignore any changes you may
  816.        have made.  The previously saved information will be used.
  817.        Pressing ESC will emulate selecting the Cancel option.

  819.        The second, "Use for now but don't save", will activate the
  820.        information shown but once you leave the program and return to
  821.        DOS these changes are lost.

  823.        The third, "Save these changes", will update the IGI255.sys file
  824.        with the new information.  The next time you use IGI255 these
  825.        same print field values will be in effect.

  828.        Printer/Date Setup - Event Dates

  831.        Event dates in the IGI text file at times contain verbiage such
  832.        as "Born 1866 (census)".  IGI255 will attempt to calculate the
  833.        proper year following a DD MMM YYYY format and use an event date
  834.        of "b.  1866" in the .DBF.  This assures a proper DATE sort based
  835.        on the year.  It would also be safe to assume that an entry with
  836.        the "b." had been reformatted by IGI255.
  837.  
  838.        The Family Search Program also produces event dates in DD MMM
  839.        YYYY left justified, such as:

  867.        dates are handled.  That is, the program can be set leave the
  868.        event dates in their original form, attempt to "correct" or "re-
  869.        work" both situations, or a combination of the two.

  871.        The first time IGI255 is run, the program is set to attempt to
  872.        correct both situations.  To change this default, select
  873.        Printer/Date Setup at the Main Menu.  When the Printer Setup menu
  874.        appears, select Event Dates.  An informative screen repeating the
  875.        information above will first appear.  Press a key.  The Event
  876.        Date selection menu will appear.  Hi-lite the new option desired
  877.        and press ENTER.  Each IGI text file processed from this point
  878.        will use the selected choice.  Select Cancel or press the ESC key
  879.        to leave the current choice in effect.
  880.  
  881.        A "Dt=Y - Vrb=Y" will appear center screen during the "Create a
  882.        .DBF" file selection process.  The Y's signify that dates will be
  883.        formatted and the verbiage will be corrected if possible.
  884.        Therefore the current options can be seen prior to processing.

  886.        The Event Date selection menu can be activated from the scroll
  887.        screen by pressing F4.  The .DBF being viewed can be reformatted
  888.        immediately without having to return to the main menu.

  890.        The only extraneous verbiage known at this time is "Born".  If

  892.        in time for the next version.

  895.        State Abbreviations & Place Information

  898.        The text files produced by the FSP do not utilize state
  899.        abbreviations but the expanded spelling instead.  Fortunately the
  900.        place information in the IGI text file is generally grouped by
  901.        commas but unfortunately the groupings aren't always consistent.
  902.        That is, the state or country for one entry may be in the third
  903.        group but in the next entry it may be in the 2nd group.
  904.  
  905.        IGI255 will attempt to determine each group, calculate the state
  906.        abbreviation beginning with the right-most group and work it's
  907.        way left.  If a match is not made in the right-most group, the
  908.        next to last group on the right will be searched and so on.
  909.  
  910.        The first time the program finds a valid state spelling, it will
  911.        assume that this is the state and go on to the next entry.
  912.  
  913.        It is possible that an entry may contain a "county" which happens
  914.        to be a valid state spelling but not a "state".  This is
  915.        generally due to excessive length of the place information in the
  916.        text file (see below).

  934.        used to determine the abbreviations and are automatically created
  935.        on start up if they don't already exist.  The complete index to
  936.        the Family Search Program Version 2.13 was used in compiling the
  937.        abbreviations used.  If future versions of the FSP change its
  938.        abbreviations, then IGI255 will possibly be out-of-date.
  939.  
  940.        The "States Abbreviation" option on the Main Menu will allow
  941.        custom state and place entries.  The F9 key at the "View/Print"
  942.        scroll screen will allow the .DBF being viewed to be "re-worked"
  943.        under this new format.
  944.  
  945.        Note:  Beginning with version 3.0, the fields which hold the
  946.        state abbreviation and place information were increased by one
  947.        space to 3 and 36 respectively.  Although this does not generally
  948.        effect entries for the U.S. and Canada, it does make a difference
  949.        when dealing with other countries because they utilize a 3 space
  950.        abbreviation.  If you simply re-work the abbreviations of an
  951.        OLDER .DBF via the F9 key, only the first two letters of the
  952.        abbreviation will be included and a sort on the "state" can be
  953.        confusing.  A .DBF created under the older format that contains
  954.        place information other than U.S. locations should be recreated
  955.        under the new format.

  957.        Although it is recommended all .DBF's created with pre 3.0
  958.        versions of IGI255 be remade, re-format all the old 'U.S. only'
  959.        .DBF's using this F9 feature, do a sort by state, and then take a
  960.        look to see if they need to be recreated before actually doing
  961.        so.  It may be unnecessary.
  962.  
  963.        Just be aware that if NEW .DBF is ADDED TO AN OLD .DBF the OLD
  964.        format will be retained.  Again, if possible, recreate old .DBF's
  965.        and when combining old and new, COPY THE OLD TO THE NEW, not the
  966.        new to the old.
  967.  
  968.        The program retains the 1st 36 characters of each place info line
  969.        from the text file - which *appears* to be the maximum length
  970.        retained by the text file.  In some cases, the place information
  971.        in the text file is so long that the 2nd line ends abruptly
  972.        chopping off what would be the state, county or country.  If an
  973.        entry like this exists, attempt to utilize the State Abbreviation
  974.        Maintenance at the main menu and customize an entry for it.

  976.        For example...there is a group of ILDERTON's with a combined
  977.        place location of "St. Nicholas Parish Rec and Nonconf.,
  978.        Newcastle Upon Tyne,".  The word Northumberland should follow but
  979.        doesn't due to the line's excessive length.  The solution in this
  980.        case was simple.

  1009.        extra effort, most, if not all, of your extra long place name
  1010.        entries can be classified.

  1017.        program.  Set their location by selecting 'Text Files Location'
  1018.        at the main menu.  Once prompted, type in the new path.  The

  1046.        A commercial screen manipulator may not allow color changes and
  1047.        you won't necessarially see what you should.  If you feel that

  1072.        process on the left, and .DBF files on the right.

  1074.        If no files are shown on the left, either the path is incorrect
  1075.        or there are simply no files in that location.  Press F5 to bring
  1076.        up the "Text File Location" request and enter a valid DOS path

  1080.        keys to hi-lite the name of the IGI text file for which a .DBF is

  1139.        then a sort for it.  A "scroll-screen" of entries for that .DBF

  1141.        filtering can be invoked by pressing the appropriate function

  1144.        Hi-lite "View/Print .DBF" at the Main Menu and press ENTER (or

  1146.        .DBF's on the left and fixed sorts on the right.  If no .DBF

  1148.        .DBF must first be created from an IGI text file.

  1154.        automatically created.  A small diamond next to the sort
  1155.        description indicates that the sort file exists.

  1158.        activate the custom sort routine for that .DBF (see Custom
  1159.        Sorts).  Pressing the LEFT ARROW key while at the left side of
  1160.        the screen returns you to the main menu - while at the right side
  1161.        of the screen returns you to the .DBF file selection.

  1163.        Once the sort has been selected, the "scroll screen" will appear.
  1164.        This is a list of all the entries in the selected .DBF in the
  1165.        sort order requested.  Use the cursor keys (down, up, page up,
  1166.        page down, home, end) to scroll thru the names.

  1169.        State field rather than 2 and the place field was increased to

  1284.        the filter is on and "Tagged Entries" is chosen, ONLY those

  1534.        and custom sorting on any field combination all create endless
  1535.        possibilities to what can be done to the data.

  1537.        The secret to a successful end result is proper planning.  Know
  1538.        ahead of time what the desired file or print out is to contain.
  1539.        It's very easy to start out with one thing in mind and get side
  1540.        tracked with a couple of other 'what ifs'.
  1541.  
  1542.        Just like researching any area of family history it's so very
  1543.        easy to get side-tracked from the initial goal.  Experienced
  1544.        researchers always tell us to "pick one name, decided on what to
  1545.        find (that is, marriage record, death record etc), and stay with
  1546.        it, don't try to find everybody at once".  How many times do we
  1547.        start looking for a marriage record for one surname and end the
  1548.        visit to the library looking for a death record of an ancestor
  1549.        from an entirely different line?
  1550.  
  1551.        This section deals with the heart of IGI255 - handling duplicate
  1552.        entries, tagging entries and what to do with them, filtering the
  1553.        database and the custom sort feature.  Like any good computer
  1554.        program, don't let the flexibility overwhelm you.  Pick one thing
  1555.        you want to do and learn it before trying something else.  Simply
  1556.        don't try to do to much at one time and in no time at all you
  1557.        will see the tremendous hidden power of the program.

  1614.        another.  Therefore you may have marked duplicates which have not
  1615.        been deleted.  When two duplicate entries are compared the second
  1616.        one is "marked" by replacing the Code field with an asterisk (*).

  1618.        It is possible that duplicate entries will exist in the IGI but
  1619.        they will have different batch numbers.  You may want to retain
  1620.        both since they may have been submitted by different people and
  1621.        you would want to be aware of this.  Therefore there are two
  1622.        marking options.  One will ignore the batch numbers and one will
  1623.        not.  One option is to mark the duplicates keeping the ones with
  1624.        different batch numbers, view them and make notes as necessary.
  1625.        Then you can re-process with the option to ignore that batch
  1626.        numbers which will also mark these.

  1629.        duplicates, "unmark" all of the currently marked duplicates, and

  1932.        Remember that sort files take up disk space.  A large .DBF file

  1953.        Creating a New Custom Sort

  1955.        If no custom sort files exist, none will be listed.  Select <new>
  1956.        from the pick-box to create a new custom sort file.  A pick-box
  1957.        of the available fields will appear.  Hi-lite the field(s)
  1958.        desired and press ENTER or the RIGHT ARROW key.  Press the LEFT
  1959.        ARROW key, the ESC key or select <quit> to return to the
  1960.        View/Print File Selection screen.

  1962.        As a field is selected will be tagged (or untagged) and added to
  1963.        (or removed from) the sort string at the bottom of the selection
  1964.        box.  The order of the fields is based on the order they are
  1965.        picked and this also determines the sort.  Experiment!

  1967.        A field can only be picked once.  Place fields are automatically
  1968.        placed with the first field first even though it may be picked
  1969.        after the second.

  1999.        Deleting Custom Sort Files

  2001.        Up to 9 sorts for each .DBF are retained at any one time.  This
  2002.        is in addition to the four fixed sorts.  Remember that these take
  2003.        up disk space.  Large .DBF files create large sort files.

  2005.        Deleting a custom sort file is as easy as hi-liting it and
  2006.        pressing the DEL key.  When the warning screen appears press DEL
  2007.        a second time to permanently remove the file or any other key to
  2008.        cancel the delete request.
