HOWREL was written to help genealogists extend their lines without
repeating other's research. PAF has a match feature but it only
matches on data that is exact in spelling. HOWREL is more
flexible; it will report "possible" matches. You can compare
single or multiple GEDCOM files. HOWREL does not perform merging.
It also does not match families, only individuals, though it looks
at the parents' names to help decide if an individual matches.
HOWREL has been tested with two kinds of GEDCOM formats, Personal
Ancestral File (PAF), version 2.2, and the GEDCOM created by the
International Genealogical Index (IGI) PC computers. PAF will
create a GEDCOM file from the genealogy information that it
stores. There are also other programs that create GEDCOM files.
HOWREL begins by looking at the first record in data-base 2. This
may or may not be the first record in your GEDCOM file. It then
searches data-base 1 for any matches. Those that match are
displayed. This continues until all records have been processed.
To determine matches, it uses: given name, surname, birth or
christening date and place, mother and father's names. These
fields are weighted in such a way that if they match, a score is
increased. The score is decreased if the field does not match.
If the final score is greater than or equal to a user adjustable
threshold, the two records are considered a match.
