  20.         GRAFTREE consists of two programs, GEDBROWS and GRAFTREE, that
  21.         enable a genealogist to read GEDCOM files directly, as a group of
  22.         related individuals, and to print Descendant Charts sideways on
  23.         dot-matrix printers.

  25.         GEDCOM files are a means of transmitting genealogical information
  26.         from one computer to another. The format, standardized by the LDS
  27.         church, is not suitable for use as a database, nor for easy
  28.         viewing by humans.  GEDBROWS presents each individual on a
  29.         separate screen, listing the person's name and dates, and the
  30.         names of his or her parents. Below this is a list of each of the
  31.         individual's spouses and children. Navigating through the GEDCOM
  32.         becomes as simple as pointing to a person and pressing Enter.

  34.         GRAFTREE produces a graphic family tree in a descendant format
  35.         sideways on Epson LQ and IBM compatible printers.  Each descendant
  36.         is enclosed in a box, with his or her birth and death dates, and
  37.         first 2 spouses or the dates for a sole spouse. Charts can be 42
  38.         generations deep and 100 pages wide. Charts deeper than 7
  39.         generations are supported by printing multiple banner style pages.

  41.         GEDCOM files must conform to Release 4.0 (August 1989) of the
  42.         standard, as implemented by PAF 2.1 or later. Most popular
  43.         genealogical database management systems, such as Roots III, The
  44.         Family Edge, and Brother's Keeper, conform to this implementation.
  45.         GRAFTREE supports IBM and compatible (including Epson LQ) dot
  46.         matrix printers. It should work on any printer that accepts IBM
  47.         graphics commands.
