  18.         Individual records in PAF allow for the inclusion of a unique ID
  19.         number which can be different from the RIN. The value of this ID
  20.         is apparent when a data file becomes large and must be split to
  21.         make it more manageable or whenever a new file is made from a part
  22.         of the original one and added to another existing file.  Splitting
  23.         of files is usually done using the GIE utility.  When GIE creates
  24.         the new file, RINs begin again at 1 but the ID survives unchanged.

  26.         To maintain a fixed reference for each person in the PAF data,
  27.         GENENUM (aka GC) copies the RIN into the ID field. No matter how
  28.         many people are added or deleted, the ID number field will always
  29.         remain the same even though the RIN might change.

  31.         PAF permits up to 10 alphanumeric characters to be entered into
  32.         the I.D. field if done by hand. GC will use one space for the '>'
  33.         character so when the I.D. number is displayed it can be
  34.         differentiated from the RIN associated with the record. GC will
  35.         copy as many as 5 digits, i.e., up to 99999, from the RIN field,
  36.         leave one space to the right of the number copied and then add
  37.         three letters or numerals which you may select to identify the
  38.         file within which you're working.

  40.         Having run GC, you will have to update the I.D. field on new
  41.         persons by hand. GC is a one time program. It helps you set up the
  42.         ID system but DOES NOT work automatically to update new records.
