  7.        I have repeatedly heard frustration expressed by PAF users over
  8.        one particular configuration issue, the changing of screen colors.
  9.        As it comes, PAF is setup to work with a monochrome screen.  This
  10.        makes a lot of sense, since this setup will work fine on any kind
  11.        of screen.  However, most users with color screens prefer to take
  12.        advantage of the colors.  For example, my eyes seem to prefer
  13.        white letters on a blue background.  The CONFIG program allows
  14.        these colors to be specified, along with many other choices.  It
  15.        might take a little experimentation to find the combination that
  16.        is right for you.

  18.        Lets assume that after having completed the CONFIG program, PAF is
  19.        running just the way you want it to.  A few months may pass, then
  20.        along comes a need to change some configuration parameter.  A
  21.        couple of personal examples:  I sometimes change to a different
  22.        printer for a time; and I usually have the temple ordinance fields
  23.        displayed and printed but sometimes need to work for a few days
  24.        with these fields not displayed.

  26.        Here is where the problem appears.  When you run CONFIG to change
  27.        some parameter, the others are preserved; except for the colors!
  28.        For some reason, it was decided that these should be reset to the
  29.        default each time CONFIG is run.  After a 10 or 15 minute session
  30.        to try all the color combinations and pick one that works well,
  31.        it's disconcerting to lose the results when all you wanted to do
  32.        was start using your new laser printer!  Of course, you could
  33.        write this perfect color combination down and enter it each time.
  34.        I guess genealogists have too much else to write down.  In any
  35.        event, many don't write down the color codes and have to work
  36.        through the combinations again.

  38.        This is a rather long way to state the problem.  The answer is
  39.        given in a simple little file called COLORS.TXT (or COLORS.ZIP in
  40.        archived format) prepared by Larry Elliston of the Orange County
  41.        Genealogical Society and the Orange California Family History
  42.        Center.  I read through the file and found a good description of
  43.        how to preserve your colors permanently.  It seems the authors of
  44.        PAF allowed for this to be done after all.  We just needed Larry
  45.        to tell us how.

  47.        This adds an extra step to the CONFIG process, but is not
  48.        complicated.  I followed Larry's instructions exactly.  It
  49.        required only that I write down the color codes desired, then
  50.        enter them in a modified definition of the particular computer
  51.        being selected.  I can see that a few slips of the fingers,
  52.        though, and your PAF may never work again.  This could happen if
  53.        you change some of the other codes that are available when you
  54.        edit the definition of a computer.  Like all new procedures or
  55.        programs relating to PAF, try this out on a copy of PAF first.
