There is a wealth of genealogical data which can be copied to
floppy disks at many LDS Family History Centers. Data from the
Ancestral File may be copied onto floppy disk as families if such
data is in the files. For the Ancestral File, the output is very
organized and easy to use in PAF. Data from the International
Genealogical Index (IGI), however, is written as individuals, with
the same person often appearing in one GEDCOM file more than once.
When such data is read into PAF it is cumbersome to attempt to
form families and to eliminate the extra entries.
ANCESTR is an attempt to provide a simpler means of transferring
data from the IGI to PAF without needing to print the GEDCOM file,
painstakingly analyze it and then manually enter the data. The
program was developed to read the GEDCOM files produced from the
IGI or the Ancestral File and help organize the individual data
into family structures. The ANCESTR program will then write a new
GEDCOM file for transfer into PAF. Within ANCESTR you may also
edit individual and marriage data, merge individual records, and
modify family structures.
With ANCESTR you may easily review the data copied from the IGI.
It makes practical copying fair amounts of data to review at home
at your leisure. Then you can more easily select the individuals
that are a part of your family and create a new GEDCOM file for
entry into PAF.
