~W~IObjective~Y~I
The user needs an objective for the game. That objective can be something
simple, like fitting random shapes together so that there are no gaps, or
something complex, like having a knight work his way down through a
labyrinth of tunnels to rescue a princess (or a princess rescue a knight).
#WN
The objective must neither be |too difficult nor too easy|. If it's too
difficult, the user will give up. If it's too easy, the user will be bored.
#WN
#C4,R16
You may have to explain the objective to the user. That's perfectly ok. I
had no idea what Tetris was about the first time I saw it. Of course, once
someone told me what was going on I was hooked, just like almost everyone
else that has ever played it.

A game with a simple premise can be just as |addicting|. No one ever had to
tell me how to play Duck Hunt, a Nintendo game. But I enjoy playing it just
as much as I enjoy majong, an Oriental game that took a lot of explanation.

The objective must be appropriate for the milieu and the character, if one
exists. Just as a ninja in a motorcycle gang probably isn't the best choice
of character for the particular milieu, making the point of the game seeing
how many falling hamburgers the ninja can catch wouldn't be a very good
match of ~R~Icharacter~Y~I, ~G~Imilieu~Y~I, and ~M~Iobjective.~Y~I
#WN
~W~IOriginality ~Y~Iis just as important here as it is in picking the milieu or the
character. There are already too many games where the point is to save the
world/galaxy/universe. It gets old really fast.

~KThe point of the game can be both to ~R~Ientertain~Y~I and to ~G~Ieducate. ~Y~II've seen
wonderful games in which the player's task is to build a space station or
a Moon colony. I've never seen one in which the point was to build a colony
on the ocean floor. I think a game like that would be great. I'd love to
learn more about the ocean. There's a lot of fascinating things down there.~k

T/F Games must have a complex (but not necessarily difficult)
objective to be interesting to adults.

No. Think about the popular game Tetris. Its objective is very
simple, but not easy to accomplish.
