In your game, there may be a ~Ymain character~Y~I that the player manipulates.

Nintendo has made a fortune off of such games,
and there is still money to be made at it.

The thing to remember is that when you create a character, make him/her
interesting enough to draw attention to the game, without distracting the
player's attention ~C~Iaway from the game itself.~Y~I

Also, make sure that the character fits into the milieu. A ninja in a
motorcycle gang probably isn't a great idea. On the other hand, a ninja
crawling around the skyscrapers of Manhattan can work just fine.

Try asking yourself what the essential nature of
the character is. A ninja crawls around the
outsides of buildings, at least until he can find
a way in. The buildings can be almost anywhere,
old Japan or modern New York.

Games can also have central characters that are ~R~Inot human. ~Y~IThey may not
even be |alive|. In Space Attackers, the game included with this book, the
central character is a tank that the player manipulates. This is
appropriate for the milieu, and the user will have no problem identifying
the tank with himself/herself.

~KYou can create characters, living or not, that can be important in people's
imaginations. It will take more time and work than just whipping up another
space shoot-em-up, but it is worth it. Unique characters can make your game
stand out from the crowd.~k
#WN
A particular game might not have a central character. This is the case with
flight simulators and similar games. Not all games can or should have a
central character.

If your game has a central character, plan the character well. Take time to
make the appearance of the central character very professional looking. The
central character of a game is on the screen more than anything else. The
perception of the quality of your game is directly related to how good
everything looks on screen.
