Madness
Madness. What can I say. Madness is a screen clearing game. It
is very simple to learn and play, but it is quite difficult to
master. The screen (20 lines by 75 columns) is filled with numbers.
One spot is blank. This is where you start. The object (simple
enough) is to clear the screen. The hard part, is how you do it.
You can move vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. As you move
you erase numbers. You can not cross a square that was previously
erased. So far, so good. Now here's the catch: The number of
squares you move is determined by the first number in the direction
you wish to go. For instance
4487683
31_3422
2295496
if you were surrounded by these numbers, and you moved left, the
screen would look like this:
4487683
3_ 3422
2295496
however, if you moved right, you would move three squares:
4487683
31 _2
2295496
Those are the mechanics. Strategy is for you to figure out.
You are awarded one point for every square that is cleared. The
maximum score is 1500. As this was written, the all time high
score is an amazing 1378 by Dennis O'Dell.

Standard Mode versus Tournament Mode
In the standard (or default) mode, every screen is the random. You
never know what to expect, some screens will be harder, and some
will be easier. If you prefer to "level the playing field," you can
implement the tournament mode (see -t in the installation section).
In tournament mode, all players during any one month period will be
presented with the same screen.
Installation
Please consult INSTALL.BOI and COMMANDS.BOI for basic installation
help. Please also note the following information:
Files
MADNESS.INS (and MADNESS.KEY if you've registered) belong in the
same directory as MADNESS.EXE.
Command Line Options
All commands in COMMANDS.BOI are available as well as the
following command
command effect
-T Tournament Mode. You can run both Standard and
Tournament Modes from the same subdirectory, as
Madness keeps seperately named data files for each
of them.
Registration and Trial Period
Madness is ShareWare. It is totally uncrippled. There are no bells
or whistles, or time delays, or time bombs, or limited functions.
You have the whole works. You are allowed to try Madness online for
up to two (2) months. At that point you should either take the game
offline, or register it. The current registration fee is ten United
States dollars ($10US). You will be sent a registration key that
will work on all future releases of Madness. Please consult
REG_USA.BOI for further details on registering this and other doors
What the files are
file what it is and where it lives
MADNESS.EXE This is Madness.
MADNESS.INS This is the instruction file that Madness will display
to users. I ask that anyone interested in translating
this into other languages to contact me personally.
A near future release of Madness and my other doors
will also allow for all text WITHIN the game to be
translated as well. This file belongs in the same
directory as MADNESS.EXE
MADNESS.KEY This is the registration key file. This file (if you
have it) belongs in the same directory as MADNESS.EXE
MADBHOF.DAT Standard Mode Hall Of Fame data file.
MADTOUR.DAT Tournament Mode Hall Of Fame data file.
The game will create and maintain these files in the
same directory as MADNESS.EXE. If you wish to reset
the Hall Of Fame, you can delete these files
MADHOF.TXT Standard Mode text Hall Of Fame.
MADTOUR.TXT Tournament Mode text Hall Of Fame.
Madness will create these files as well. These files
are designed as user bulletins. By default they are
created in the same directory as MADNESS.EXE, but they
can be moved and/or renamed by use of the /Y command
line option (see COMMANDS.BOI). These files display
the all time high score, the three best from the
previous month, and the current month's top ten.
MADNESS.TRN This text file contains a number from 0 to 65535.
This is the "seed" value for the current month's
tournament game. If you change this number, you
change the game. By careful manipulation of this
file, you can play any map you want. Madness will
create and maintain this file in the same directory
as MADNESS.EXE.
BOI.LOG The BBS Onliner Interface maintains this log file for
diagnostic reasons.
