* REMOVE Version 3.0 *

1. About this program
=====================
Maybe you know this : You have just got a plain text document from the Inter-
Net (e.g. a UseNet article), an e-mail message or any other textfile, like this
documentation. Now you maybe want to place it into your word processor - and
the result is, at least in most cases, a mess. The reason why is easy to ex-
plain : In almost all of this files every single line is finished by a line-
feed and / or a carriage return to reduce the linewidth to a maximum of 80
characters (sometimes some more, sometimes less). This linefeeds make it im-
possible for every text program to 'auto-wrap' your file into it's own line-
width. Now you maybe can start to remove this linefeeds by hand - but this is
really going to be a lot of dumb work, especially if the size of your file is
about 500 kB or more. You could also use certain word processors, like Word or
WordPerfect, to delete all linefeeds in your file. This also causes you a lot
of work, because this method removes ALL linefeeds, which would make paragraphs
and empty lines disappear.
If you did already have such problems, or presently have them, you should try
REMOVE. This program replaces the linefeeds of such textfiles with blanks. Up
to this, it takes care of the general layout of your files by separating wanted
from unwanted linefeeds. And it is really fast (unlike earlier versions) ! In
fact, it handles a file of 1 MB size in only 10 seconds - this is even faster
than most word processors are able to save it (of course this value depends on
the system you use !). The size of the files you wish to convert is only li-
mited by the available disk space.
And there is another advantage : As the popularity of international networks,
like the InterNet, Compuserve or the FidoNet, grows day by day, it becomes
necessary to handle files from different operating systems. REMOVE detects and
handles the three most popular formats:
1. textfiles based on DOS-compatible systems,
2. textfiles from UNIX-related operating systems,
3. textfiles from Macintosh machines.
(If you only want to convert textfiles into / from one of the above formats,
you should check out TextConvert, which is also included in this package.)
Especially if you are often using international network services, this program
can save you a lot of work.
2. The Syntax
=============
The syntax of remove is very easy :
REMOVE [SOURCE FILE] [DESTINATION FILE] <SWITCH>
The first parameter is the name of the file you wish to convert, followed by
the name of the new (the converted) file. (You may specify the source file by
using wildcards (* and ?), but please note that wildcards WON'T work if you use
them in the name of the destination file.)
You have to enter at least these two parameters. However, to enable the spe-
cial features of REMOVE, you will have to add a third parameter to the command
line. There are three options available, each with a corresponding letter. Note
that you have to combine the letters standing for the options you wish to be
enabled to only ONE parameter (e.g. LT, LC, CL, ...). It's not important how
you combine them, that means that 'CHOCOLATE' or 'LOCATE' would have the same
effect as 'LCT'.
This use of switches might seem strange to some people, but I (and many
others) think this is the easiest and fastest way. Or would you like it more
to enter something like '-l -c -t' instead ??
The Switches
............
L - Using this letter you advise the program to take care of the
file's general layout. This affects on empty lines as well as on
paragraphs starting with either a blank or a tabstop. If you are
NOT entering this letter, ALL linefeeds will be replaced with
blanks.
You will need to use this option with most files.
C - If you are using this letter, every sequence containing at least
two blanks in a row will be replaced with only one blank.
T - By default, every tabstop of the source file will be converted in-
to a blank. If this bothers you, please use this letter.
Not all options make sense with every file. For example, if you want to con-
vert this documentation file, 'LT' would cause the best result.
This doesn't mean that REMOVE will handle all files perfectly. In fact, there
will be always some texts, that will not look exactly as you want. Please don't
blame me if this happens - watching a text on a screen and analyzing it byte-
by-byte are two different things !!
3. Distribution
===============
You may use, copy and distribute this program freely (in fact, it would be
great if you would give it away to as many of your friends as you want or up-
load it to you local BBS), IF you
- DON'T charge a fee for distribution, copying or use;
- DON'T modify it in any way;
- keep all related files (Windows-Version, DOC-files ...)
together when distributing it.
By the way, if you like this program(s), or even if you don't like it (them),
or if you have any comments, suggestions or whatsoever, please don't hesitate
to contact me (e-mail adress below !).
That's it ! Enjoy !
