Earth Federation

Even as the White Base begins its desperate flight from Side 7 back to Earth, the Federation has already begun trial mobile suit production. Investigating the possibility of tailoring its designs for specific environments, the Federation field-tests early versions of its mobile suits specialized for land and space combat. Ultimately the Federation will opt for a single all-purpose design, the familiar RGM-79 GM, but as of October 0079 it's apparently keeping its options open.

While the RGM-79E GM seen in the first episode is designed for space use, the mobile suits used by the 08th MS Team's Kojima Battalion are designed specifically for ground combat. The Kojima Battalion uses two such trial models - the RX-79[G] Gundam, assembled from spare RX-78 parts, and the pre-production RGM-79[G] GM. Using 80% of the same parts as the RX-79[G], this early version of the GM is close to a Gundam in its performance and capabilities.

These trial designs are outfitted with a variety of weapons and optional equipment. The RX-79[G] even has an equipment rack on its back that can be used to carry weapon containers, parachute packs, or other oddball gadgets. Though the Kojima Battalion's mobile suits are initially armed only with projectile weapons, in November 0079 the beam rifle becomes standard equipment.

Since the RX-79[G] was made from a limited supply of spare parts, field mechanics are forced to improvise when repairs are necessary. Thus, when Shiro Amada's Gundam is badly damaged in the course of the series, the Kojima Battalion's mechanics customize it with the materials on hand, creating the unique Ez8 (short for "Extra zero 8").

Also appearing in the series is a prototype version of the Ball. This RB-79K is converted from a civilian space pod, and it still bears the winch and spotlights of its civilian cousin, unlike the military-produced Ball which appears at the end of the One Year War.

Zeon Dukedom

Most of the Zeon mobile suits seen in this series are old favorites from the original series. The most notable newcomer is the experimental mobile armor Apsaras, whose Minovski craft system allows it to fly with gravity-defying ease. Designer Ginias Saharin intends the Apsaras to be Zeon's ultimate weapon, capable of single-handedly turning the tide of the war, though thus far he's having a difficult time realizing his dream.

Another interesting newcomer is the MS-06RD-4, a Zaku fitted with early versions of the Rick Dom's legs. This hybrid test unit was created to gather performance data for next-generation mobile suits such as the MS-R09 Rick Dom and MS-14 Gelgoog.
