My Virtual Reference Desk A more personal computer resource comes in the form of My Virtual Reference Desk (MVRD), a one-stop reference for all things Internet. This is a neatly organised collection of links and downloads, combining everything from encyclopedia, dictionaries and telephone books, to HTML guides, search engines, clocks, counters and calculators. There's even a link to an Australian 'sister site',
which is great if you're frustrated by the US focus of
MVRD. The Australian site, while chock full of links, is
definitely not as nicely organised. Computer Book Review With hundreds of computer book titles flooding the
market every month CBR is a handy way to keep up with the
best new titles. Keep in mind that this is an American
publication and some of the books are released later in
Australia if at all. But most of them offer extras for
anyone with their books, plus updated software. Information SuperLibrary Claiming to have over 20,000 pages of free text, this
is the online home of Macmillan publishing. There is
plenty to do there, including peruse the Internet Starter
Kit and download goodies from the free software library. O'Reilly & Associates These kind folks have put up there free PC, Hardware
and Data Communications dictionary online, not to mention
Ora.Com a slightly biased newsletter containing reviews
and author interveiws. The Cobb Group Specialising in `computer tips and secrets' the Cobb
Group are responsible for dozens of program specific
newsletters and books. Most of their work requires a
subscription fee but there are plenty of free things to
be had on this page. Other books publishers' sites: Addison-Wesley Longman Coriolis Group Jamsa Press McGraw-Hill Microsoft Press New Riders Osborne Peachpit Press QUE Publishing Sams Publishing Sybex Ventana ZD Press Newsgroups:
