Religious worship

Religion plays an essential role in our lives. We worship hundreds of gods and goddesses, each of whom rules a human activity or an aspect of nature. We hold many ceremonies, some of which are related to planting, harvesting, and other farming activities. Through these ceremonies, we hope to win the favor of the gods and to be granted a good harvest.

Our gods include Centéotl, a corn god; Tonatiuh, the sun god; and Quetzalcóatl, the god of civilization and learning. Huitzilopochtli, a war god, is the special guardian of the people of Tenochtitlan. Sometimes wars are fought to capture prisoners to sacrifice to our gods.
