In the past, most monks made ink from soot mixed with a gum obtained from trees. Many modern scribes prefer ink prepared from oak galls - swellings that grow around parasites such as insect larvae - especially on oak leaves. Soaking the galls produces an acid that can be mixed with other substances to make excellent ink.
