Parchment

Certain of our brothers, led by Brother Audric, make parchment from the skins of sheep, goats, and calves. It may take 200 to 300 sheep to make the pages of a large Bible. The brothers begin by washing the animal skins and placing them in lime to remove the hair and fat. Next, they stretch the skins on a frame. When the skins are dry, the brothers rub them with chalk and pumice to make a smooth, white writing surface.
