Note to Netscape 3.x users: If you wish to use MidiGate as your midi player of choice and another midi player always wants to take over, do the following:
- Go to your Program Files\Netscape\Navigator\Program\plugins directory
- Rename Npaudio.dll to Npaudio.dl
- (Optional) Rename Npaudio.zip to Npaudio.zi
That'll deflect control from the default plugin and allow MidiGate to do its job.
If you like MidiGate, you'll love
CD GATE!
MidiGate is a Web browser helper application which:
- Automatically starts Midi sequences linked to a Web page.
- You now can click on as many file links as your winsock allows multi-connections: they'll be added to the queue as soon as loaded. There's no need to wait for one file to complete downloading before clicking on another .mid file link.
- By editing MIDIGATE.INI you can choose to automatically reset the Midi system each time MidiGate starts a new sequence (either GM, GS or XG resets).
- Select one or more files at once.
- Re-entrant queues: Only one MidiGate instance is activated. The internal queue is automatically updated.
- Stay-on-Top option.
- Queue Files can be saved and replayed.
- Tri-position end option: Auto-Exit, Loop, Auto-Stop.
- Seek capability (click on the gauge).
- Save capability (pick and choose with your ears).
- Can invoke your soundboard mixer file.
- Scan for text in the file (copy to clipboard).
- GM/GS/XG/Patch reset keys (needs gm|gs|xg|pa_reset.mid in the dir.) (See also MidiGate.INI mentioned above for the auto-reset feature).
- Auto-Restart after Reset: can be invoked in the middle of play.
(These reset .mid files are included in the setup file)
- Finally, you can also use MidiGate as a stand-alone Midi player.
When MidiGate is invoked, it always starts minimized (as an icon) - out of the way. You can however restore it to normal size if you wish to see the name of the file, the status of the player, and the position gauge.
The new Stay-on-Top feature can be activated for easy access while browsing great archives...
Several factors may prevent your WWW browser from automatically launching a Midi sequence:
- No Midi Setup. - Install one. At minimum a sound card such as Sound Blaster will do the trick. For better sound, connect a separate synthesizer (General Midi patches recommended) with its own Audio Out and amplifier.
- Midi Driver Misconfigured. - Use the Control Panel to access the Drivers and Midi Mapper setup utilities. If you've got a separate synth, use Midi Out, otherwise use FM Out (through the sound card).
- Mosaic Options misconfigured. - Your Mosaic client must know what to do when receiving a Midi file. This is usually set with the Options menu.
For example if you use, say, Netscape's Navigator, you must go into the Options - Preferences - Helper Applications menus to set your chosen Midi player as the application to launch when receiving a file with Mime = Audio/Midi and extension ".mid" or ".midi". Otherwise, you may receive the Midi file as TEXT! (Not too useful.)
- Not enough memory! You may not get an error message, but MidiGate (or another player) can't start a big sequence or just quits (or hangs!) before the end. - Make a trip to your local RAM store. Also, you may try downloading the sequence to a file; exit the browser to release memory; then manually start the midi player. If that works - then you KNOW you've got a low memory problem.
- The WWW Server you're connected to doesn't send Mime = Audio/Midi. - That can happen too... (It did to me!) In this case, you must contact your server administrator and ask that the Mime = Audio/Midi be added to the Web server's setup and that the system be rebooted (otherwise the change doesn't take effect.)
- The Midi helper application doesn't start the sequence automatically. Unfortunately both mplayer.exe and mmjbox.exe need to be manually coaxed to get the music started. That's where MidiGate comes in!
Click HERE to download MidiGate (shareware - $10) from our ftp directory.
You'll need to activate the "Load to Disk" option before doing that. If you're using Navigator just press the Shift key while clicking on the link. That'll do the trick. If not - don't forget to deactivate the option after the download!
Note that MidiGat_.exe (the installation kit) does NOT contain vbrun300.dll. (Most of you already have this. If not, click vbrun300.zip to get it. (vbrun300.dll must be placed in the \windows\system subdir.)
Once downloaded, run midigat_.exe to install the software (midigate.exe). Then tell your Web browser about this new helper application. (See above.)
Finally, you may want to delete the installation kit file MIDIGAT_.EXE (NOT midigate.exe which is the actual executable!) after you run it, to save disk space.
