Blue-winged Warbler

A yellow warbler with a thin black eye line, a green back, blue wings and two white wingbars. Length: 12 cm.; weight: 9 g. Audio 3 (M. Oberle). Breeds in the eastern USA in recently abandoned, brushy fields. It competes with the related Golden-winged Warbler for habitat but actually prefers slightly older successional growth than Golden-winged Warbler (5-11 years versus perhaps 1-3 years for Golden-winged Warbler). Normally winters in Central America. Rare winter visitor to the Virgin Islands, and has been reported more regularly in recent years from Puerto Rico (e.g. Barrio Cialitos, Ciales, 17 February 1998; Maricao, 2 December 1996).
