A black throat and cheek patch, and a yellow wing patch distinguish this warbler. Length: 12 cm.; weight: 9 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Breeds in the eastern USA in recently abandoned, brushy fields. Normally winters in Central America and northwestern South America. Rare migrant in wet forests and coastal areas on Puerto Rico. On its breeding grounds, this warbler has declined by 2.2% per year from 1966-1995, as North American forests matured past the early stage of plant succession that this species requires. In addition, it has declined due to interbreeding with the closely related Blue-winged Warbler (Vermivora pinus).

TAXONOMY: PASSERIFORMES; PARULIDAE.
