A large parakeet with a long, tapered tail. Bright green above, and greenish-yellow below, with a white eye ring and a red leading edge to the folded wing. Length: 32 cm. Native to Hispaniola where it has declined to the point of becoming rare, presumably due to trapping for the pet trade and hunting. This species is considered vulnerable to extinction with a total population of less than 10,000. Introduced Hispaniolan Parakeets have been seen near Mayagüez, Luquillo and elsewhere on Puerto Rico, but not in recent years. One subspecies Aratinga chloroptera maugei formerly lived on Mona Island but is now extinct. It may have lived on the main island of Puerto Rico as well until the 19th Century. It was a duller yellow color on the undersides than the Hispaniolan subspecies, Aratinga chloroptera chloroptera (illustrated above).

TAXONOMY: PSITTACIFORMES; PSITTACIDAE; Arinae. Also called Hispaniolan Conure.
